FRIDAY, JULY 28, 1989
New York (JTA) — Sales of
Israel bonds have reached a
total of $292.6 million since
Jan. 1, representing an in-
crease of 15 percent over the
same period last year.
Sales of Israel government
securities offered by the Israel
Bonds Organization set a new
record of more than $631
million in 1988, surpassing
1987 figures by $27 million.
Since the campaign was laun-
ched in 1951, total sales have
passed the $9.6 billion mark.
"We have set as our goal for
1989 the achievement of our
$10 billion sales milestone
since our inception in 1951,"
said Ambassador Meir
Rosenne, president and chief
executive officer of the
organization.
"I am confident that as we
move into the intensive phase
of our annual campaign this
fall, which begins with our
traditional High Holy Day
appeals in 1,100 synagogues
in the United States and
Canada, we ;rill reach this
milestone before the end of
this year."
Launched initially in the
United States, the Israel
Bonds campaign now sells
Israel government securities
in Canada and a number of
countries in Western Europe
and Latin America.

Haifa USO
To Stay Open
New York (JTA) — A USO
facility in Haifa, slated to
close for lack of funds, will re-
main open due to efforts of
private donors, the Jewish
War Veterans of the USA and
other veterans' groups.
"Navy personnel \vill now
continue to enjoy the
hospitality that is afforded
them in the only friendly port
in the Middle East," said
Herbert Greff, JWVnational
commander.
In March, USO President
Charles Hagel announced the
need to close the Haifa facili-
ty along with six other USOs.
The Haifa USO, however,
has always been popular
among Navy personnel whose
ships dock in Haifa's busy
harbor. "The Sixth Fleet
visits ports in the Mediterra-
nean our sailors like the best,
and that's why we keep corn-
ing back to Haifa," Vice Ad-
miral James Williams said.
A JWV letter-writing cam-
paign and complaints from
other U.S. Navy veterans'
organizations led Hagel to
reconsider the closing.
