Dr. Tamy Chelst is heading a study to assess the potential impact of conversations be- tween drivers and passengers on driving performance. With a $40,000 one-year grant from the American Association of Retired Persons Andrus Foun- dation, Chelst is observing the driving of middle-aged and older adult men as they follow predesignated routes and maneuvers while their wives engage them in conversation. The study focuses on two kinds of conversations. Chelst calls the first directional, in which husbands are asked to drive as the wives guide them through the various turns and maneuvers. In the se- cond, or distractional, husbands drive the same routes while their wives tell them interesting stories unrelated to the driving task. The study is being con- ducted at the Troy Athens High School driver's educa- tion range. All volunteers receive a free hearing test and will be paid.
