Participants Needed
For Driving Study

Hearing-impaired men
aged 50-80 are needed for a
research project being con-
ducted by a team of resear-
chers from the Wayne State
University Institute of
Gerontology.
Dr. Tamy Chelst is heading
a study to assess the potential
impact of conversations be-
tween drivers and passengers
on driving performance. With
a $40,000 one-year grant from
the American Association of
Retired Persons Andrus Foun-
dation, Chelst is observing
the driving of middle-aged
and older adult men as they
follow predesignated routes
and maneuvers while their
wives engage them in
conversation.
The study focuses on two
kinds of conversations. Chelst
calls the first directional, in
which husbands are asked to
drive as the wives guide them
through the various turns
and maneuvers. In the se-
cond, or distractional,
husbands drive the same
routes while their wives tell
them interesting stories
unrelated to the driving task.
Other factors considered in
the study are the passengers'
seating placement, tempera-

ture in the car and whether
the windows are open.

The study is being con-
ducted at the Troy Athens
High School driver's educa-
tion range. All volunteers
receive a free hearing test
and will be paid. Appoint-
ments may be scheduled both
in the day and evening
throughout the summer.

For information, call Tamy
Chelst at the Institute of
Gerontology, Wayne State
University, 577-2297.
