LATEST ACCOMPLISHMENT: "Winning the world championship of the Odyssey of the Mind." PHILOSOPHY: "Team work." BACKGROUND: Micah Heilbrun was born in Houston, Texas. He lived there for- one year and then moved with his family to the island of Oahu, Hawaii. He lived there for seven years while his father was a biostatistican on the Japan Hawaii Cancer Study for the Kuakini Medical Center in Honolulu. He has fond memories of Hawaii. "It was pretty sunny, but there was lots of rain. The temperature was in the nineties." He also recalls the temperament of the people. "Everybody was real laid-back." In Hawaii, Micah learned to speak Pigeon, which is part Hawaiian and part English. One day, while playing in Hawaii, he found parts of a rocket. He then became interested in building rockets, which he still enjoys today. "I've launched over 30 rockets." He has 45 in his collection. Another interesting hobby is painting miniatures. After watching his brother play the popular game, "Dungeons and Dragons," he became fascinated with knights. He paints miniature knights that are one inch high and highly detailed. During the summer months, he swims competitively for the Cranbrook Swim Club. He also enjoys sailing on Torch Lake. Micah attends Berkshire Middle School and will be entering the seventh grade in the fall. Last year he earned a grade point average of 3.75. One of his projects this year was the Odessey of the Mind competition.. Students are given specific problems and have about six weeks to solve them. They use a diagram and a skit, which are scored on creativity, scenery and costumes. A team of seven students, guided by Maggie Van Camp, had to construct a balsa wood structure with a one-eighth inch support to hold the largest amount of weight possible. The team managed to support 352 pounds on a structure that weighed five grams and was eight inches tall. The team finished first in the state and went to the world finals in Colorado. Some 100,000 students participated world wide and the Berkshire Middle School team finished in first place. Micah believes the key to success in this project was teamwork. "You have to have teamwork. If you don't work together, there's a lot of fighting." Micah continues to espouse the teamwork philosophy when he says: "It's a fabulous competition, but you need a •good coach."
