to work on the project include
Zvi Gitelman (on the Soviet
Union), Andrew Ezergailis
(Latvia), Meir Michaelis (Ita-
ly), Haim Avni (Spain), Irving
Abella (Canada), Livia
Rothkirchen
(Czechoslovakia), David
Weinberg (France), and
Wyman himself (United
States). Dr. Nan Karwan-
Cutting of Cornell Universi-
ty's Jewish studies depart-
ment is the managing editor.
According to Wyman, the
work was originally intended
to be a complete encyclopedia
of the Holocaust. However,
with the recent publication of
the four-volume Encyclopedia
of the Holocaust by Mac-
millan, the project "moved in
a new direction."
According to Rabbi Charles
Rosenzveig, executive vice
president of the HMC, the
projected completion date of
the project is 1991. The deci-
sion whether to use a univer-
sity publisher or a commer-
cial publisher will be made
later this month. Several
publishers, however, have
already expressed an interest
in the book, including Yale
University, said Rosenzveig.
"Johns Hopkins is also ex-
tremely interested in the pro-
ject," he said.
The project was initially
estimated to cost $300,000,
but "it now appears that it
will cost considerably more,"
said Rosenzveig. The work is
being funded by a private
grant from Solomon and
Aliza Nivy.

German Party
Invites PLO
Bonn (JTA) — The opposi-
tion Social Democratic Party
has invited the Palestine
Liberation Organization to
attend the party convention,
to be held in West Berlin in
October.
The invitation was extend-
ed personally by the SPD
chairman, Hans-Jochen
Vogel. Vogel, who was
minister of justice until 1982,
is the SPD's probable can-
didate for chancellor in the
next national elections. He
has always been regarded as
a good friend of Israel.
According to political
observers, the invitation to
the PLO was intended to
define the SPD's foreign
policy positions and differen-
tiate them from Chancellor
Helmut Kohl's conservative
government.
Israel's Labor Party, a
member of the International,
will boycott the session to pro-
test the invitation.
