Day weekend finals with
match play running through
August. Mitch Wayne, a 4 or
5 handicapper, and Iry
Korens, a 7, are seen as
leading challengers to the
reign of Young, who is a par
or 1-handicap golfer, said club
golf pro Dennis Spaulding.
As for the women,
Spaulding said Brodsky will
find good competition from
Sylvia Wohlman, a former
women's titlist.
At Franklin Hills, Stig
Aronsson, Steve Radom,
Robert Welhing and Stuart
Schwartz should be key con-
tenders to end the Kukes
Dynasty when the medal play
finals roll around Aug. 20, ac-
cording to golf pro Tom
Deaton. Doug Hamburger, a
former junior champ, also will
be a solid factor, as will Art
Levin, a former state junior
champ.
Korotkin is a strong favorite
to repeat as women's champ,
Deaton said. ❑
Franklin Hills
Upends Tam
Tam O'Shanter's quest for a
second consecutive
undefeated interclub tennis
doubles team season ended
July 20 when Franklin Hills
upset the host team, 5-3.
Because of inclement
weather, the match was
played indoors at Centaur Ra-
quet Club. Tam slipped to 2-1
for the season, with its final
match scheduled Thursday at
home against winless
Knollwood Country Club.
"If we lose to Tam on Thurs-
day, I'm personally going to
fish 10 golf balls out of the No.
14 hole pond," promised
Knollwood tennis pro Bob
Chonoles.
Franklin and Knollwood
tied 4-all in their first
meeting this season. The two
will meet again at Knollwood
Aug. 24.
Kirsches Win
TVip To Munich
David and Ellen Kirsch of
West Bloomfield shot a net
score of 661/2 at Knollwood
Country Club Sunday to win
a berth in the Cross-
Continental Cup world mixed
couples golf finals in Munich,
Germany, Aug. 9-11.
Runners-up in the field of
60 couples were Sheldon and
Mari Kaftan, also of West
Bloomfield, with a 67 net,
followed by Richard and Sheri
Gershenson of Birmingham
at 67 1/2.
The world competition,
sponsored by Bogner U.S.A.,
Lufthansa Airlines and
BMW, is in its second year.
The finals field in Munich
consists of 20 U.S. couples and
26 couples from other coun-
tries. As with the qualifying
rounds, the finals use the
Chapman System, in which
players alternate shots.
Sunday's Cross-Continental
competition was part of
Knollwood's annual Husband
and Wife Championship,
Molenda said. Championship
flight winners were Carmi
and Sharron Slomovitz of
West Bloomfield with a low
gross of 87; first flight, the
Kirsches, 89 low gross; second
flight, the Kaftans, 92; and
third flight _ , the Gershensons,
98.
Grunfeld Joins
Knicks' Staff
New York — Ernie
Grunfeld, former National
Basketball Association player
who coached the U.S. Masters
basketball team in the recent
Maccabiah in Israel, has been
named to the coaching staff of
the New York Knicks.
Grunfeld, who played nine
NBA seasons — two in
Milwaukee, three in Kansas
City and the last four with
the Knicks — had been color
analyst on the team's radio
broadcasts the last three
seasons.
He joins former NBA star
Paul Silas on the staff of new
Knicks' coach Stu Jackson.
2 At Franklin
Score Aces
Three's a charm and then
some, says Franklin Hills
Country Club golfer Chuck
Lewis.
Lewis, who's been golfing 50
of his 62 years, used his 3-iron
on the 162-yard No. 3 hole Ju-
ly 8 to record his third hole-
in-one at the club.
Not only that — it was 28
years to the day since Lewis
scored his first ace, said club
golf pro Tom Deaton.
Also notching a hole-in-one
this month at Franklin was
David Frank, who got his first
ace July 3 with a 3-wood on
the 218-yard 16th hole.
