about a third the size of that
of the national United Way
even though the nearly 6
million Jews in the United
States represent less than 3
percent of the total popula-
tion. "The UJA raises more
each year than the American
Cancer Society, American
Heart Association, Muscular
Dystrophy Association,
March of Dimes, and Na-
tional Easter Seal Society
combined," the newspaper
said.
Since it was founded, the
Jewish community has raised
more than $13 billion for the
UJA alone. Some $7 billion of
that sum have gone directly
to projects in Israel.
Last year, the UJA, largely
through the network of local
Jewish federations around
the country, raised $800
million and sent roughly half
going to Israel. Most of the
rest remained in the United
States to pay for Jewish
education, social services,
hospitals and other causes.
Despite the damage caused
to Israel's image in recent
years as a result of the in-
tifada, the Who is a Jew?
crisis and other matters,
American Jews continue to
give generously to the UJA.
By all accounts, there have
been very few donors who
have dropped out because of
their irritation with some of
Israel's more controversial
policies.
Recent demographic studies
commissioned by the UJA
have shown that the centrali-
ty of Israel still remains the
single most important incen-
tive in raising money in the
Jewish community. American
Jews, by and large, continue
to identify with Israel, and
the UJA is clearly their ma-
jor address for expressing that
support.
Stuart Eizenstat, a well-
known Washington lawyer
and former White House of-
ficial in the Carter ad-
ministration, said that the
American Jewish community
itself has gained a great deal
from this unique fund-raising
relationship with Israel.
Much of the UJA network
around the country has
become the dominant point of
secular Jewish identification.
"This would not have occur-
red to anything like the ex-
tent that it did had Israel not
been a focal point of federa-
tion activity," he said. "It's
been absolutely central in
terms of the whole political
organization of the American
Jewish community."
