Mr.Alan's 10 0 off

board member of its United
Synagogue Youth chapter. He
spent a summer in Israel in
1973. Ever since, Pessin has
eyed Jerusalem as a possible
work location.
The Chinese people, he
said, know very little about
Judaism. Most Jews there are
foreigners. In Hong Kong,
Pessin and Kahn edited the
Hong Kong Jewish Chronicle
and were active members of a
small, close-knit Jewish com-
munity. For holidays, whether
in Hong Kong or Beijing, they
ordered special packages from
New York.
Pessin begins his new
duties for VOA in WaAlington
next week, where he plans to
spend one to two years before
securing another overseas
assignment.

Bangkok and Paris.
Without any notes, Pessin
offered specific times and
dates in recounting stories
that led to his expulsion. He
was out of town on assign-
ment when protests erupted
and returned to cover the
student-led movement.
Within weeks, student
uprisings snowballed into 20
China cities.
Pessin regularly interview-
ed students and broadcast up-
dates of the movement, repor-
ting on student protests and
government reaction.
After Soviet leader Mikhail
Gorbachev, viewed by
students as a champion of
reform, drew about one
million people to a speaking
engagement, government of-
ficials declared martial law.
Pessin said not much hap-
pened at first, and it appeared
as if the students made some
progress. Rumors that troops
were preparing to move in on
protestors picketing in
Tianenman Square spread
around China. Troops sur-
rounded the square for weeks.
Like other journalists, he
spent sleepless nights talking
to passersby, students and
police, waiting restlessly for
something to happen.
"I thought it might end in
deaths," Pessin recalled. He
spent much time in the mid-
dle of the square, but even-
tually moved to the outskirts
as a safety precaution. Pessin
was sleeping at his apart-
ment at 2 a.m. when troops
finally moved in on the
students. He knew the
Washington desk would wake
him if any violence erupted.
Pessin was awakened by a
phone call from Vi:-Ishington
shortly after 2 a.m. 'rhe caller
advised that he not put
