Three days prior, Bangkok Club with its Thai decor and cuisine, held a private $25 per person pre-opening benefit for International Institute of Metropolitan Detroit's ethnic enrichment programs . . . The event was underwritten by the Siam Corp. Both conventional and Thai floor-style seating was among the Thailand decor . . . Also the traditional washing of hands with hot towels before eating . . . plus using forks to put food onto spoons, as ex- plained before dining began. With Simaese music played on a piano and then instru- ments of Thailand, tuxedoed waitresses and waiters brought mixed appetizers, coconut chicken soup, Thai cajun fish, Tamarine curry beef, ginger chicken and Thai sweets and fruits. Thai cuisine is a combina- tion of sweet, sour, hot, salty and neutral flavors to stimulate taste senses . . . It features the culinary tradi- tions of both Chinese and In- dian cuisine, with flavors depending upon ingredients native to Southeast Asia, in- cluding fresh coriander, lemon grass, kaffir lime, kha root and among the world's hottest chilies. But make no mistake . . Thai food does not have to be spicy to be good . . . It can be ordered mild or medium and give satisfying results. I liked one of our waitresses at Bangkok Club, Melinda Saulson . . . In fact, everyone at the table enjoyed her gracious efficiency and bright smile. NICK SYROS, Dimitri and Naomi's fine son at their Southfield restaurant, has an "I Do" date set for June 24, 1990, with Terri Soublis of Philadelphia . . . They met in Florida and will reside here, where Nick's dad, mother, brother Paul and he operate the original Dimitri's of Southfield, reopened on Southfield a block north of 10 Mile.
