Scientists Probe
Survivors' Sleep

Scientists at the Technion's
sleep laboratory have
discovered that individuals
who actively suppress major
traumas in their past cope
better in later life.
The study focused on the
sleep patterns of 23 Holocaust
survivors and 10 control sub-
jects, according to Technion
Magazine.
Researchers found that sur-
vivors who had adjusted well
to post-war life recalled their
dreams less often, while most
of the dreams they did
remember were about trivial
matters. They also avoided
speaking about of the
Holocaust, though they
stressed they would never
forget what they had
experienced.

Tel Aviv (JTA) — An up-
surge of aliyah from the
Soviet Union was largely
responsible for the 39 percent
increase in immigration to
Israel during the first six
months of 1989, according to
Uri Gordon, head of the
Jewish Agency's Immigration
and Absorption Department.
He said new arrivals totaled
8,275 from January through
June, and emigration from
the Soviet Union was up 177
percent.
There were 2,818 Soviet
newcomers through June.
Nevertheless, the dropout
rate among those leaving the
Soviet Union remained cons-
tant at 90 percent.
Dropouts are Jews who
emigrate from the Soviet
Union on Israeli visas but opt
to settle in other countries.
Gordon reported 1,000 im-
migrants have arrived this
year from Argentina, an 18
percent increase over the first
six months of last year. That
country's severe economic
distress and recent change of
political leadership seem
responsible for the rise.

Whoa there, cheddar! Time to
shine up those boots, swiss.
There's a new kosher cheese
in these here parts.
Called Aravah, it's the first
commerical cheese to be
made west of Winnipeg.
Aravah, meaning prairie in
Hebrew and implying "the
West," is produced in eight
varieties.
