Boat People Adopted By Temple
Find Success On West Coast

D
ang Lieng didn't
know a word of Eng-
lish when he arrived
in the United States. He
didn't understand work
schedules and he had never
driven a car.
Today, Lieng is a licensed
carpenter in California. His
two -oldest sons are part
owners of a Chinese
restaurant in a popular Los
Angeles hotel. His youngest
child, Soi, just graduated with
honors from high school and
will enter the University of
California.
The Liengs are the adopted
family of Temple Emanu-El,
which in October 1979
became the first local con-
gregation to sponsor a family
of Asian "boat people."
After one year-and-a-half in
Detroit, the Liengs moved to
California to be closer to
other Vietnamese and to
escape the cold weather.
They have stayed in contact
with their friends at Temple
Emanu-El. Temple member

Arriving in the United States, the Lieng family is greeted by Bea Sacks
and her husband, Elaine Zaks of the Resettlement Service and Rabbi
Lane Steinger.
Bea Sacks recently visited
the Liengs in California and
found them doing well.
Lieng's wife, Lan, does
piecework at home on her
sewing machine, Sacks said.
Son Yung works for the U.S.
post office and Va does com-
puter work. Sacks and her
husband had dinner in the
restaurant owned in part by
the family's two oldest sons.
"They really wined and din-
ed us," she said.
Nothing about their early
days in the United States
portends the Liengs' success
today.
When they first arrived, the
family had nowhere to stay.
