Would I have wanted to sur- vive? If it happened now, would any of the non-Jews I know be willing to risk their own lives in an attempt to save me? How bad was the smell?" • "What did a Nazi think about when he stood naked in the shower?" • As a teen and early adult, her "flimsy, self-indulgent despair" paled before her mother's consolation: "Just imagine you're in a concen- tration camp." Now, Merkin dreams less of Hitler. She "recognizes the aggressor" for who he is — her father — and can "even identify with him for a while and then walk on." 0 75% OFF R • DV 'S BRODY ' including Nancy Heller LAST TWO WEEKS All previous sales and layaways excluded Final Sale. R • DY 'S BRO DY ' Since Sigmund Freud thought dreams were "the royal road to the un- conscious," the Viennese psychoanalyst would pro- bably have had a field day with writer Daphne Merkin's dreams that suggest a Jew's self-hatred. In an essay in Es- quire, Merkin, now in her mid-30s, talks of the dreams she had for several years of Adolf Hitler. These occurred mostly in her late adolescence and early teens and, much more rarely, today. Hitler smiled at her, even stroked her hair — "the hair of a Jewess, the wrong color hair, not an Aryan blond." Merkin writes that she has read enough about Hitler to know that "the real object of his fury was his father, Alois, who had beaten him with Teutonic conviction." So in her dreams, she tells Hitler that his anger against his childhood makes him want to kill Jews, Hitler "nodded his head, comprehended, and six million lives were about to be spared! How much we can un- do in dreams." But when not dreaming, Merkin had "an innate feel- ing of houndedness." Like Hitler, she had a fear of her father. Her parents were German-Jewish parents with "authoritarian inclinations." One of the few Orthodox families living in New York's Upper East Side, the Merkin family felt isolated. Walking to shul on Yom Kippur, Merkin was certain that everyone could tell I was Jewish, as clearly as if I were wearing a yellow star." up to R • DY ' BR ODY ' Freudian Dream Of Adolf Hitler SUMMER CLEARANCE 0 co 0 Huge Groups Of Summer Clothes a 0 50% 03 0 O OFF • T Shirts • Bathing Suits 03 0 •_Shorts • Etc.
