Whiplash! Threat To The Innocent Repeated

I have warned for some time now of the severe consequences of the whiplash injury.
Because of this concern, I would like to report on a newspaper column by Dr. P.J. Stein-
crohn, M.D.

We need more, many more articles such as the one by Dr. Steincrohn, under the col-
"A Doctor's View," on this serious whiplash problem.

"Whiplash! It deserves an exclamation point. Of all injuries, it is near the head of the
list in its lightning-like strike at the innocent.

Hyman Bookbinder:
Interest, anger.

'moderates' that's very
prevalent and very
troublesome," Bookbinder
said. "It makes me wonder if
the statements of an Arafat
notwithstanding, we're still
struggling for recognition as
a Jewish state."

At the same time,
Bookbinder has not been shy
about criticizing Israeli ac-
tions — especially the recent
decision by the Likud Central
Committee to attach new
qualifications to Prime
Minister Yitzhak Shamir's
peace plan.
"I thought that was a terri-
ble decision," he said, "and I
let my friends at the Israeli
embassy know how dismayed
I was by it."
Bookbinder is also spending
time nurturing the flame of
domestic liberalism that gave
shape to his years at the
American Jewish Committee
— and before that, his work
with President Johnson's War
on Poverty.
"In the next few months,
we'll celebrate the 25th an-
niversary of the beginning of
the War on Poverty," he said.
"This year, we're scheduling
events to remember the war,
and to re-galvanize this coun-
try to pick up the challenge of
ending poverty."
He vigorously rejects the
popular conservative notion
that the anti-poverty effort
was misdirected. "It's such a
disservice to defame what
this country did, and sought
to do, in various anti-poverty
programs," he said. "The on-
ly problem with that war is
that we stopped too soon. So
I'm doing a lot of writing and
speaking on this issue and on
the big job we still have to do."

Federations Gird
For Abortion Fight

The recent Supreme Court
decision on abortion has
focused growing attention on
state capitals, where the issue
will now be thrashed out.
But one Jewish group has
already laid solid groundwork
in statehouses across the na-
tion. A number of Jewish
Federations have opened
state offices in recent years,
with several more currently
in the works.
"We're aware that a lot of
the action in legislating social
services delivery is moving to
the states," said Mark
Talisman, director of the
Council of Jewish Federations
Washington Action Office,
which is coordinating the ef-
fort. "Catholic and Protestant
groups have been doing this
for years; as power shifts in
this direction, it's important
for us to have a presence
there, as well."

The result is an acceleration injury. Although it is true that some complications are
a convenient and imaginary damage which serves as a basis for litigation, VOLI can be sure
that in most instances the innocent sufferer has sustained painful after-effects which may last for months or even years.
"Injury may he caused even in low velocity accidents, b e ca u se th e head and nec k accel e rat e with much greater speed
and force than the car itself. Studies continue to be made on the causes and management of whiplash extension-flexion
injury to the neck. Even rabbits and monkeys are being used in experiments. These already indicate that microscopic
evidence of nervous system hemorrhage in the cervical (neck) spine may occur even when x-rays fail to disclose any major
injury.
"In rabbits, investigators found that there was also damage to the middle ear which may he one of the reasons why,
in humans, there are complaints of dizziness, headaches and loss of equilibrium. Other symptoms are blurring of vision,
nausea, and of course neck pain, muscular spasm and limitation of neck motion ..

If you are involved in a rear-ender ... no matter how light, I urge you to call for a complete exam.

Federation offices are also
taking an increasingly active
role in controversial issues
like medical ethics and
abortion.

Zb date, 11 Federations have
state offices, according to
Talisman. New York, Califor-
nia and Florida led the way a
number of years ago. But now,
with more money being chan-
neled through state govern-
ments, these older Federation
offices have shifted their em-
phasis away from human
relations issues and towards
the funding and delivery of
social services.

Bookbinder maintains an
active public speaking
schedule and regularly serves
on panels with Palestinian ac-

Bookbinder said he has notic-
ed a trend in recent months
towards challenging the
whole notion of a Jewish
state.

disturbing evidence of a new

"When you are driving your car you are at least semi-tense and Mentally alert.
But, when you sit quietly waiting for ; -1 light to change, completely relaxed, physically and
mentally, you are at the mercy of the sudden, sickening jolt from behind which lashes your
head backward (or backward and forward) on the top of your spine.
