At a recent dinner marking the conclusion of his 32nd annual baby photo contest, Knight's staff presented him with a collage of photos of the 248 babies and children photographed for the event. Upon receiving the gift, Knight asked if anyone had a camera, but came up empty. Wife Sue Knight was a pleasant hostess at the dinner, which included among its guests photo contest judges Myron and Jackie Milgrom, Free Press photographer Tony Spina and Heidi Press, news editor for The Jewish News. EYES AT SEA It was a beautiful day to cruise the Detroit River, and that's exactly what 100 Detroit area ophthamologists did. The event was sponsored by Drs. Harold and Myra Weiss, Dr. and Mrs. Howard C. Joondeph and Dr. and Mrs. Mark H. Haimann of the Retina Consultants of Michigan. The scene of this three-hour champagne brunch was the touring ship, The Infinity, docked at Jefferson Marina. Other guests included Dr. and Mrs. Marvin Shulman, Dr. and Mrs. Lawrence Castleman and Dr. and Mrs. Thomas Millman. ❑ I NEWS I Riga Delegates Report Gains New York (JTA) — Soviet and American delegates to a recent historic Jewish cultural conference in Riga report concrete gains that in- clude establishment of a com- mittee to coordinate a Jewish federation in the Soviet Union. Some 200 representatives from 40 Jewish organizations throughout the Soviet Union gathered in the Latvian capital in a meeting of Jewish religious and cultural activists. The Soviet Jews were join- ed by prominent Jews from other countries, including the United States, Canada and France. Soviet Jewry's leading cultural activist, Michael Chlenov, was elected presi- dent of the newly formed coor- dinating committee, a first step to forming a federation of Jewish organizations in the Soviet Union. The delegates, both Soviet and foreign, were warmly received by the secretary of the central committee of the Lithuanian Communist Par- ty. The strongly independence- minded Lithuanians at that time had spoken of their desire to revive Jewish life as it was in the past. As a goodwill gesture, Lithuanian authorities pro- mised they would erect pla- ques at the site of mass slaughters of Jews during World War II. The plaques would specifically say that the victims were Jewish. Foreign Minister Vladislovas Mikuciauskas, former mayor of Vilnius, ac- cepted in principle the twin- ning of his city with Jerusalem. Vilnius was known as "the Jerusalem of Lithuania." SPOT 50%-70% OFF ALL NAME BRANDS • Vertical Blinds • Levolor Blinds • Pleated Shades • Wood Blinds 21728 W. Eleven Mile Rd.
