"J.E. and the Uptown A's" is a collage of mixed media on cardboard measuring about 84 inches by 60 inches. Alvin Loving created it earlier this year for his one-man show at the Bronx Museum for the Arts. It was a DIA Founders Society purchase, from the Twentieth Century Painting General Fund and the Friends of Modern Art. Now the Detroit-born ar- tist's piece is on view as a star entry in "The Appropriate Object" exhibition at the DIA which continues through Sunday. The exhibition features sculpture, painting and mix- ed media work by seven con- temporary African-American artists: Loving, Maren Hass- inger, Richard Hunt, Oliver Jackson, Betye Saar, Ray- mond Saunders and John Scott. Loving'ss work has ap- peared nationally in numerous-one-man and group shows. He received a Gug- genhiem Foundation Fellowship (1986) and a Na- tional Endowment for the Arts award in painting (1982-1983).
