Israel is a country where
not only personal security,
but national survival, is at
stake; yet, the government
still sees fit to regulate
handguns.
"It's hard for me to admit
it," one gun enthusiast told
Schrag, "but I think the
status quo is good. Free trade
for handguns in Israel would
endanger many people . . . We
have already allowed
everyone access to one lethal
instrument, the automobile.
Why should we give people
, another one?" Cl

Dutch Kapo's
Acquittal Upheld

Amsterdam (JTA) — The
Supreme Court of the
Netherlands has upheld the
acquittal of Dutch expatriate
Rinus de Rijke, who for many
years was on the wanted list
of war criminals.
De Rijke, who has lived in
West Germany since 1945,
was arrested last year, when
he crossed the border to visit
relatives in Holland.
He was accused of brutal
behavior toward prisoners at
the Eriuca concentration
camp at Onmen in the
Netherlands, resulting in the
death of at least one Jewish
prisoner and the severe
mistreatment of many others.
De Rijke was sent to the
camp for black market ac-
tivities. He was made a
"kapo," a prisoner placed in
charge of other inmates.
A special tribunal in The
Hague that heard his case
decided that he did not com-
mit his atrocities "in the state
or public service of the
enemy," and therefore was not
guilty of war crimes.
The Dutch Supreme Court
has now agreed. Rijke, who
returned to West Germany, is -
said to be considering a claim
for damages against the
Dutch government.

Israelis Able
To Visit China

Brussels (JTA) — Increasing
numbers of Israeli tourists
are visiting the People's
Republic of China, despite the
lack of diplomatic relations
between Jerusalem and
Peking.
The movement is facilitated
by a Brussels-based travel
agency, Sinotra, which has a
representative in Tel Aviv
who is in direct contact with
the Chinese.
