SIDEWALK SALE July 13, 14, 15 reasons for the cutbacks in Bonds operations. The Israel Bonds offices that will be eliminated are in Columbus, Ohio; New Haven, Conn.; Providence, R.I.; Seat- tle; Kansas City, Mo.; Worcester, Mass.; Allentown, Pa.; Orange County, Cal.; Wannamasset and Cherry Hill, N.J.; and Ft. Lauderdale and Sarasota, Fla. The Jewish National Fund, responsible for land reclama- tion and planting trees in Israel, is closing offices in Seattle, Dallas, St. Louis, Denver and Kansas City. JNF spokesman Stuart Paskow said six to 10 employees will lose their jobs as a consequence. Paskow said the cuts were "a question of making the best and most efficient use of resources." He said donors have grown more concerned in recent years about maintaining a favorable ratio between the amount JNF collects and how much it spends on ad- ministrative costs. "The bottom line is deliver- ing all the money we can to Israel," Paskow said. Neither JNF nor Israel Bonds said that declines in fund- raising or bonds sales were responsible for the cuts. Paskow said that while last year's campaign was flat, JNF fund raising was going well this year. Israel Bonds reports that sales are 20 percent ahead of last year. Both organizations said that despite losing a perma- nent address in the cities where offices are being cut, they plan to remain visible in those areas. mailings, Direct telemarketing and advertis- ing will be stepped up in order to keep the organiza- tions' donor base in these communities. Also, in what is being called "regionaliza- tion," offices in large cities will serve as headquarters for an entire region. But some lay leaders are unhappy with the move. Steve Friedman, president of the JNF board in Seattle, said he thought closing the of- fice in his city would be a "serious mistake." Friedman's board protested the decision to JNF officials in New York. "They told us they could do the tree sales and certificates and fund rais- ing just as well from San Francisco," Friedman said. San Francisco will be the headquarters of a newly created JNF Pacific Nor- thwest region. Israel Bonds also is transferring its Seattle operations to San Francisco.
