On the occasion of his 85th
birthday and the city of
Detroit's 288th birthday, the
Detroit Historical Commis-
sion and the Detroit
Historical Society will
dedicate the Detroit
Historical Museum's Streets
of Old Detroit to Leonard N.
Simons, president emeritus of
the Detroit Historical
Commission.
The dedication will take
place July 24 at 11 a.m. at the
Detroit Historical Museum,
5401 Woodward.
For more than four decades
Simons has been involved
with the development and
growth of the Detroit
Historical Department and
its museums.
Simons is involved with
Temple Beth El, Greater
Detroit Interfaith Round
Table of the National Con-
ference of Christians and
Jews, the Michigan Cancer
Foundation, Sinai Hospital,
Infantile Paralysis Founda-
tion, Jewish Home for Aged
and Jewish Welfare
Federation.
In education, he has been
involved with the University
of Michigan, Hebrew Union
College, Brandeis University,
Hebrew University and he
was former Michigan chair-
man of the United Negro Col-
lege Fund.
His association with Wayne
State University includes
membership in the Macken-
zie Honor Society, the Hillel
Foundation and the Wayne
State University Press.
In 1987, Simons and his
daughters, Mary Louise Zieve
and Susan Sava, established
the Harriette L. Simons
Classical Studies Library at
WSU in memory of Simons'
wife, Harriette Lieberman
Simons.

The Jewish American/
Polish American/Ukrainian
American Council of Metro-
politan Detroit will present a
program on the latest
developments on Poland from
Mariusz Ziomecki of the
Detroit Free Press editorial
staff at 7:30 p.m. Thursday
at the Southfield Civic Cen-
ter Parks and Recreation
Building, Room 115, 26000
Evergreen.
Ziomecki is a member of the
local dialogue group and was
born and raised in Poland
before he had to leave at the
time of Solidarity's suppres-
sion in the early 1980s.
Questions on the Jewish

community of Poland past
and present as well as Polish/
Israel connections will be
discussed.
The public is invited. There
is no charge.

Loneliness
Is SPACE Topic

SPACE will sponsor a drop-
in discussion group at 7:15
p.m. Wednesday. The topic to
be discussed is "How Do You
Deal With Loneliness." Pre-
registration is not required.

SPACE, Room to Grow, is a
non-sectarian community ser-
vice of National Council of
Jewish Women — Greater
Detroit Section, which offers
support for those men and
women who are divorced,
widowed or separated, and
their families.

JWV Elects
Officers

The
Department of
Michigan, Jewish War
Veterans of the U.S.A., has
elected new officers. They are:
Department Commander and
representative to national
shrine, Ely J. Katz; Depart-
ment Senior Vice Com-
mander, Bertram Ellstein;
Department Junior Vice
Commander, Sanford
Pliskow; Judge Advocate,
Jack Kraizman; Quarter-
master, Burton Chassin; Na-
tional Executive Committee
and Policy Committee, Milton
Klein.
Appointed as chief of staff
was Jack Schwartz. Bernard
Feldman was appointed
adjutant.

Veterans Plan
Hospital Party

The
Department
of
Michigan of the Jewish War
Veterans and the Jewish War
Veterans Auxiliaries will hold
their yearly joint department
hospital party at the Battle
Creek Veterans Administra-
tion Hospital on Sunday. A
chartered bus will leave at
8 a.m.
A deli picnic lunch will be
served outdoors to the pa-
tients at noon. An orchestra
will be on hand to entertain,
and gifts will be distributed
to the patients. Past Depart-
ment President Dorothy
Cohen and Chaplain Torn
Tannis are the hospital
chairmen.
Flo Weber is department
president and Ely Katz is
department commander.
