the summer. At one point,
camp counselors included a
young man named Chevy
Chase and a young woman
named Gilda Radner, Ada
said. "I had so much fun, I
couldn't say 'no' " when
Handler would ask her to
work for him.
Eventually, Ada succeeded
Robert Basch as JPM phys-ed
director, also becoming a cer-
tified gerontologist qualified
to teach health and fitness to
seniors. And the onetime
"funny lady" took serious
note of the condition her
senior citizens were in,
creating "Super Senior
Fitness" at JPM. The three-
times-weekly, one-hour ses-
sions have had as many as
110 seniors going through
low-impact aerobics, stret-
ching and weight-band
exercises.
"I saw a need for the senior
population to become fit and
adjusted to walking," she said
of her program. Also created
was Butzel Vacation Days,
which began as a six-week
program six years ago but
which has been reduced to
one week due to lack of fun-
ding, she said.
In addition, Ada conducted
the Butzel health spa camps;
toddler and pre-school gyms;
pre- and post-natal exercise
classes and kalosomatics, a
fitness program set to music.
Now 56, Ada and daughter
Amy, youngest of three Ban-
dalene children, go jogging at
5:45 a.m. each morning. Has
anything slowed Ada? Said
husband Kalman, "I sit and
watch her and I get tired."
Elontra Jennings, JPM
chief custodian, said it's even
tough trying to be a
gentleman around Ada. "You
can't open a door for her — by
the time we get down to the
end of the hall, she has the
doors unlocked and she's
counted all the missing
lightbulbs."
At her recent farewell par-
ty, Mort Plotnick, Center ex-
ecutive director, described
Ada as "an exciting, lovely
lady who cares very deeply
about the Center, its people
and Jewish life."
And Marty Oliff, Center
programming director who's
been Ada's supervisor seven
years, said, "She gives the
whole complex a sense of corn-
ing alive." 0

Krickstein,
Mansdorf Lose

Aaron Krickstein of Grosse
Pointe Woods lost his fourth-
round tennis match at
Wimbledon to eventual win-
ner Boris Becker in three
sets.

Lost year a million teenagers
ran away from home. Running
away is often a symptom of
depression — a disease that can
be treated.
If you think your teenager is
suffering from depression —
don't blame yourself or hope the
problem will disappear. Call
Psychiatric Center of Michigan,
;`..1 before your child's problem gets
beyond your reach.

Krickstein, Michigan's lone
representative in the fabled
English tournament, has now
reached the fourth round in
each of the Grand Slam
tourneys — the Wimbledon
and the French, Australian
and U.S. Opens. He plans to
enter the next U.S. Open,
which is in September.
Another Jewish netter at
Wimbledon, Israel's Amos
Mansdorf, also bowed in the
fourth round, losing to defen-
ding champion Stefan Edberg
in three sets.
Meanwhile, in Detroit, top-
seeded Robbie Weiss of
Chicago defeated R.J. Dunkle
of Centreville, Ohio, in two
sets to win the men's singles
championship in the third an-
nual Top Gun tennis tourney
at the Bloomfield Open Hunt.

Breast Surgery
Video Released

Several members of the
metro Detroit Jewish com-
munity have helped produce
a home exercise videotape to
meet the special needs of
women recovering from
breast cancer surgery.
The tape, "Get Up And Go:
After Breast Surgery" was
created by Health Tapes, Inc.,
a non-profit organization, in
conjunction with the Univer-
sity of Michigan Breast Care
Center and the American
Cancer Society, Michigan
Division, Inc.
Said to be the first of its
kind, the tape features five
women who have experienced
breast surgery, led by exercise
instructor Joan Wenson. In-
cluded in the five are Blondie
Fram and Lila Taylor. Etta
Vinik, also a breast cancer
survivor, developed the script.
Health Tapes, Inc., is an af-
filiate of GTN Industries of
Oak Park, a teleproduction
firm whose president is Joan
Binkow.

Butzel Fitness
Camp Cancelled

A four-day fitness camp for
adults, scheduled for July
13-16 at the Butzel Con-
ference Center at Camp Maas
by the Jewish Community
Center, was cancelled when
only 10 persons registered.
The registrants all were
persons who had participated
in the camp held three years
ago, according to Irma Starr,
director of the Jimmy Prentis
Morris Center, which was
coordinating the camp. Butzel
can accommodate 48 people,
she said, but the minimum
needed to hold the camp
was 24.
