yeshivot.

The UAHC's new pamphlet.

The Union of American
Hebrew Congregations and
the National Federation of
Temple Sisterhoods recently
published a 16-page Russian
language pamphlet, "What Is
Reform Judaism?"
The brochure will be made
available to the World Union
for Progressive Judaism for
use in its work with Jews in-
side the Soviet Union and to
Reform synagogues in the
United States and Canada for
programs for Soviet Jews who
have immigrated here.
Single copies of the pam-
phlet may be obtained
without charge by writing or

Beth Jacob
Names Officer

Jon Birnkrant

Jon Birnkrant has been
elected president of Temple
Beth Jacob in Pontiac.
Founded in 1918, Beth
Jacob is Oakland County's
first Reform congregation.
Born in Detroit and raised
in Pontiac, Birnkrant attend-
ed Cranbrook school and
received his bachelor of
science degree from Tufts
University. He earned his law
degree from Villanova
University school of law.

Charter Action
Is Delayed

Spring Glen, N.Y. — Action
on the charter application of
Young Israel of Bloomfield
was delayed until 1990 P+ the
recent 77th annual convention
of the National Council of
Young Israel.
The congregation was urged
to complete such re-
quirements as holding ser-
vices continuously for a year
and completing its
constitution.
David Tanzman of Oak
Park, a Young Israel regional
vice president, said the
synagogue began holding
regular services in March and
that a committee is com-
pleting the constitution.

CCAR Names
Rabbi Karff

The Central Conference of
American Rabbis, the profes-
sional organization of Reform
rabbis in the United States
and abroad, last week elected
Rabbi Samuel Karff as its new
president at the centennial
convention in Cincinnati,
Ohio.
