Nira Lev, associate pro- fessor of Hebrew at Midrasha College of Jewish Studies, will receive the community's second annual "Berman Award for Outstanding Pro- fessional Service." Created through an endow- ment by Mandell L. and Madeleine H. Berman, the award recognizes the con- tritutions of Jewish com- munal professionals within the network of the Jewish Welfare Federation and its beneficiaries. At the Midrasha, Lev teaches adult Hebrew classes and trains professors to teach Hebrew as a second language. Lev is also a member of The Midrasha Journal editorial board and editor of Ivriton, a Hebrew journal for students. Besides her responsibilities at Midrasha, Lev instructs high school students at the Agency for Jewish Education (United Hebrew Schools). In her 25 years of teaching, Nira Lev teaches Hebrew to adults at the Midrasha. Lev has compiled and written many booklets, cassettes and articles on Hebrew instruction. A committee of lay leaders and professional colleagues, chaired by Dr. Conrad L. Giles, selected Lev for the award. She will be honored Aug. 31 at a meeting of the Jewish Welfare Federation Board of Governors. The award will enable Lev to at- tend a seminar which will enhance her professional skills. Louis and Vivian Berry Will Be Weizmann Honorees Congregation B'nai David members purchased more than $478,000 in Israel Bonds at the congregation's annual State of Israel Bond Tribute Dinner. Detroit Committee for the Weizmann Institute of Science will have its annual dinner Sept. 7 at the Hyatt Regency hotel. Honorees will be Louis and Vivian Berry. The Berrys have long been of with the Weizmann Institute and the Detroit Committee. Berry was among the founders of a Detroit sup- port group in the 1940s. He and Mrs. Berry serve on the Detroit board of directors and also on the national board and the national advisory council of the American Committee. Robert Sosnick, chairman of the Detroit board, has an- nounced that Wilfred B. and Rolla Doner will be honorary chairmen of the black-tie event. The Doners will host a cocktail party on Aug. 1 to benefit the newly established Louis and Vivian Berry Fund for Research in Immunology. Proceeds of the fund will go toward research in scleroderma.
