Are Dead Sea
Scrolls Being
Suppressed

Historians and biblical
scholars are demanding ac-
cess to unpublished sections
of the Dead Sea Scrolls that
they say may hold insights to
the history of Judaism and
the origins of Christianity, ac-
cording to Biblical Ar-
chaeology Review.
Written by the Review's
editor, Hershel Shanks, who
is also editor of Moment
magazine, the article noted
that those seeking access to
the scrolls charge that its
custodians are deliberately
obstructing research. Shanks
also asserted that a timetable
for publishing some of the re-
maining documents by 1997
that had been negotiated bet-
ween Israel's Department of
Antiquities and the editors in
charge of the scrolls was "a
facade for further delay"
because it included no provi-
sions for assuring compliance
by scholars.
John Sturgnell, a professor
at Harvard Divinity School
and chief editor of the scrolls'
publication team, said it was
not uncommon for the pro-
cessing of similar ancient ar-
chives to take 50 to 100 years
of scholarly labor. So far,
materials from the scrolls
have been published in seven
volumes of Discoveries in the
Judean. Desert between 1955
and 1982.

Levin, a Democrat like his
brother. "They know why I
strongly believe in Israel and
in the strategic relationship.
We've had some very in-
teresting discussions about it.
They really kind of expect me
to be pro-Israel. In that sense,

important respects" for his
political career.
"It was an asset,- he said,
"but it was never a dominant
factor politically."

I probably have it easier than
other senators. Being Jewish
they expect it. They want you
to have an open mind; they
want you to be accessible, and
I am accessible. For the most
part, they handle me with at
least as much respect as my
other constituents."
