threw in some Hebrew before
Jewish audiences.
Among the Jews, the presi-
dent scored points with his
tough attacks against the
media, charging biased repor-
ting against Israel. "In the
cruel and distorted prejudiced
coverage by the media of
events in the Middle East," he
told Parliament, "the
slaughter in Beirut does not
warrant the coverage given to
children throwing stones in
some West Bank village."
In enthusiastically receiv-
ing Herzog in Parliament,
Mulroney declared Canada's
unswerving" support for
Israel and welcomed the
Israeli peace initiative as a
"significant" step forward but
noted that "the legitimate
right" of the Palestinians to
determine their own future
on the West Bank and Gaza
must also be accepted.
Herzog said that Israel has
"no desire to rule another
people and to direct its life,"
but he cautioned against out-
siders offering Israel too
much advice. "Remember," he
said, "what for others is a
matter of foreign policy, is for
us a matter of existence."
In his speech, the president
strongly defended Israel's
record. "I believe that given
all the difficulties and with
all our short-comings, our
society has shown as much
maturity and humanity as
any other society in similar
circumstances, he said. E

than had been anticipated.
A story in the Citizen
reported that six pre-teen
Canadian-Palestinian
children, in T-shirts and
shorts, were leading the
chants "Shamir and Hitler
are the same/The only dif-
ference is the name!" and
"Brian, Brian, you should
know/We support the PLO!"
during Herzog's speech in
Parliament.
Herzog, with his polished
Irish-accented English and
French, came across well.
