And Rep. Tom Lantos, a
Holocaust survivor, introduc-
ed even tougher legislation
that would deny China Most
Favored Nation status, a
designation that involves
favorable status in trade with
the United States. Unlike the
amendment to the foreign aid
bill, the Lantos measure
would require congressional
action to upgrade China's
trade status. Currently the
measure has some 30
co-sponsors.
"Human rights are indivisi-
ble," said Lantos, whose fami-
ly was wiped out at
Auschwitz, "whether they be
for Soviet Jews, Bahais or
Chinese. It can't be a narrow
issue; our concern about
human rights has to be all-
encompassing."

Kosher Slaughter
Of Chickens
The Swedish Kosher
Chicken Crisis is over, thanks
to the efforts of B'nai B'rith's
International Council — and
the intervention of B'nai
B'rith members around the
world.
Several months ago, Warren
Eisenberg, director of the
council and the group's chief
international troubleshooter,
became embroiled in a
dispute over regulations in-
volving the slaughter of
animals. Swedish officials
had begun enforcing a
30-year-old law regulating
sanitary and humane
slaughter — which virtually
eliminated the slaughter of
beef in Sweden, and limited
the slaughter of chickens.
This proved a hardship for
many of Sweden's 25,000
Jews, who were forced to im-
port kosher beef and poultry.
"In the case of the chickens,
the Jewish community didn't
just want an exemption to the
law," Eisenberg said. "They
wanted it clearly defined in
law that kosher slaughter is
humane slaughter."
Eisenberg negotiated with
Swedish agricultural officials
and organized an effort by
B'nai B'rith members to ex-
press their concerns to bring
their concerns to Swedish
diplomats around the world.
Last week, Eisenberg learn-
ed that the Swedish govern-
ment heard the message loud
and clear. Swedish
agricultural officials an-
nounced an exemption from
the animal protection laws for
kosher slaughterers — and
acknowledged the fact that
kosher slaughter is, indeed,
humane.
"We're very pleased by the
understanding shown by the
Swedish government,"
Eisenberg said. "And we're
very pleased by the impact of
our people around the world."

ADL Backing
Investigation
Of Skinheads
The
Anti-Defamation
League of B'nai B'rith is mov-
ing quickly to capitalize on
their recent report showing
increasing activity by a
number of "Skinhead" hate
groups.
ADL's Washington office
has distributed copies of the
report to every member of
Congress, and the group is
trying to encourage support
for a congressional measure
supporting attempts by the
Justice Department to zero in
on several pockets of
Skinhead activity.
"We are working with
members on the House side to
generate support for the
Justice department's in-
vestigation in Texas," said
Jess Hordes, the groups'
Washington director.
The Justice Department
has instigated a criminal in-
vestigation of the "Con-
federate Hammer Skins"
group in the Dallas area.
The ADL report, Hordes
said, is already generating
strong interest on Capitol
Hill. In addition to the in-
creasing membership of
Skinhead groups, the report
focused on two additional
trends — increasing activity
by anti-Semitic and racially
bigoted groups in high
schools, and the acquisition
by these groups of deadlier
weapons.
