cluded on July 28, 1906,
when Dreyfus was reinstated,
promoted to a full colonel and
given the Legion of Honor.
However, the Dreyfus affair
had a strong impact on the
outlook of world Jewry and
had enormous implications.
Jews were shocked that in
France, "the homeland of
liberty," such anti-Semitic ex-
pressions should take place,
much less be condoned.
Theodor Herzl's confidence
in liberalism was shaken and
contributed significantly to
his embrace of Zionism.
The Dreyfus episode still
persists in France itself. The
fact that there is yet a con-
troversy over where the
statue of Dreyfus will
ultimately be placed is one
expression of this.
The original plan was to
place the statue on the parade
ground of the Ecole Militaire,
where Dreyfus was degraded
before being shipped to
Devil's Island.
This was too much for the
right wing and the defense
establishment. They did not
think the military college,
where the army would be con-
stantly reminded of their in-
justice, would have been an
appropriate location.
It was decided to place the
statue in the Tuileries garden
by the Seine River, not far
from the parade ground
where Dreyfus was stripped of
his insignia of rank and his
sword broken.
But this area also happens
to belong to the national
government, and the city's
authority does not extend
there. The final location of the
statue is still a matter of
negotiation.
The creator of the sculpture,
Louis Mitelberg, has an in-
teresting background. Actual-
ly, Mitelberg is better known
as Tim, a political cartoonist
whose work regularly ap-
pears in the French magazine
L'Express.
Born in Poland in 1919
Mitelberg first heard about
Dreyfus from his father in
Warsaw. He came to Paris to
study architecture at the age
of 17, was mobilized in World
War II, captured and sent to
a German prisoner-of-war
camp. He escaped and made
his way to Britain, where he
joined de Gaulle's Free
French Forces.
On the day the statue was
unveiled, Mitelberg was ask-
ed what his work meant. "I
wanted my statue to show
that Dreyfus was faithful and
that it was the others who ac-
cused him who were traitors."
Thus it is that the recent
dedication of the statue of
Dreyfus represents a final
triumph of justice. El
