Zionist Group
Endorses Plan

Jerusalem (JTA) — The
Zionist General Council
recently adopted resolutions
supporting the government's
peace initiative and its policy
of barring contacts with the
Palestine Liberation
Organization.
The General Council is the
governing body of the World
Zionist Organization between
sessions of the World Zionist
Congress, which convenes
every four years.
The resolution supporting
the government peace plan
urges Palestinians in the
West Bank and Gaza Strip to
participate in the elections
the plan proposes. The resolu-
tion was approved by all par-
ties except the left-wing
Mapam and the right-wing
Tehiya parties.
Mapam, the United
Workers Party of Israel, alone
refused to endorse the resolu-
tion backing the ban on con-
tacts with the PLO.

Unemployment
On The Rise

Tel Aviv (JTA) — Unemploy-
ment in Israel rose to 8.3 per-
cent of the work force during
the first quarter of this year,
a 46 percent increase over the
same period in 1988, the Cen-
tral Bureau of Statistics
reported last week.
The bureau said an average
of 124,000 people were look-
ing for work in the three-
month period ending March
31.
More have joined the ranks
of the unemployed in recent
weeks, because large
employers are dismissing
workers with the onset of an
economic recession.

IDF Strikes
At Terrorists

Jerusalem (JTA) — The
Israel Defense Force cracked
down this week on terrorist
gangs in the Nablus and
Jenin areas that have
targeted Palestinians believ-
ed to be cooperating with the
Israeli authorities.
The army also imposed a
curfew on the Tulkarm
refugee camp Tuesday follow-
ing disturbances there.
More than 50 arrests were
made in the Nablus area.
Four houses belonging to
suspects were demolished and
six were sealed off, following
the arrests.
The security forces hope the
roundup ends the yearlong
firebomb attacks in the
Nablus area.
