Soble maintains that com-
munity responsibility touches
the areas of fine arts, as well
as educational, social, and
religious obligations.
He and his family have
maintained a very special
relationship with Congrega-
tion B'nai David. In 1982, So-
ble became president of the
synagogue, the first president
in 90 years whose father had
also headed the congregation.
"There is a warmth in that
synagogue that is replicated
in few others," Soble believes.
Soble also has been an ac-
tive sponsor of the Anti-
Defamation League, has sup-
ported the American-Israel
Political Action Committee,
has sat on the board of the
Jewish Community Center,
worked with the Israel
Cancer Foundation, and in
the late '70s headed the phar-
macy section of the Health
Division of the Detroit-area
Allied Jewish Campaign.
Soble is currently the
general chairman of Metro
Detroit State of Israel Bonds.
His commitment to Israel was
something passed on to him
by his dad. He firmly believes
that whatever happens to the
State of Israel will ultimate-
ly happen to all world Jewry.
"For the preservation of Jews
everywhere the State of Israel
must remain strong. Only a
fool would want to find out
first-hand what would happen
if there were a demise of this
fabulous country. When we
invest in an Israel bond, we
are investing in ourselves."
Soble holds peple in the arts
in very high esteem, and his
handsome home on Upper
Straits Lake is filled with a
variety of traditional and con-
temporary masterpieces.
"When you become involved
in art, the brain just doesn't
stop. Everything I'm doing
now is directed toward allow-
ing myself to spend time on
my work, but, still, there are
never enough hours in the
day.
"Then, too, you have to have
pretty thick skin to be in the
fine arts world," Soble says.
"Basically you have to be
prepared for a tremendous
amount of rejection. For every
person who likes one of your
pieces, there are 20 who may
not."
