And it changed, when my situation changed. Right now, maintain a sense of humor. Don't take anything too seriously, and live one day at a time. Before, I always relied on a sense of humor, but I was more me centered. Since I've been in a wheelchair, I direct myself more towards doing for others. I'm more of a volunteer." She attended Bagley Elementary School, Post Middle School and was graduated from Mumford High School in 1960. Her father was in the coffee business and her mother was a homemaker. "I thought I had the perfect set-up. My home was a happy place to be." She recalls enjoying her adolescent years. She was involved in many high school activities and was a cheerleader. She first attended Eastern Michigan University and the University of Michigan, but was graduated from Wayne State University. After her marriage, she taught at Leonhard School in Southfield for one year before starting a family. While raising her children, she was always physically active. She was a jogger and took flying lessons. At age 30, her life took a dramatic turn. She developed numbness and tingling and was diagnosed as having a progressive neurological disease. She then had surgery and was fine for the next seven years. When her symptoms returned, she again had surgery and has been in a wheelchair since 1982. Her first year in a wheelchair was extremely difficult. "It was like being in a prison. I used to be dependent upon people to pick me up and take me places," she recalls. Now, she has accommodated her lifestyle by moving to a one-level home and driving on her own. Although she is divorced, her ex- husband, Richard, remains a close friend and supporter. She also views herself as lucky to have many supportive family members and friends. Since she has been in a wheelchair, volunteering has been an important part of her life. She just finished working on the Metro Detroit Access Guide, which lists public places and their accommodations for the handicapped. She also volunteers at the Jewish Home for Aged Fleischman Residence/Blumberg Plaza and enjoys the contact with the residents. "The focus is not on me as an individual, but what I can do for someone else."
