. . . Along with his paid
engagements, he manages to
weave in a number of charity
performances each year, pay-
ing musicians out of his own
pocket . . . For the past 18
years, Doug has been asso-
ciated with the Musucular
Dystrophy Telethon locally,
playing through all 24 hours
. . . In keeping with that com-
mitment, he and the Red
Garter Band were on the dock
sending off 150 muscular
dystrophy youngsters for a
two-hour cruise on board the

Lancaster Stars
As Klinghoffer

Rome (JTA) — Actor Burt
Lancaster, working here on a
film about the Achilee Lauro
highjacking said that is a
challenge playing Leon
Klinghoffer, the American
Jew who was shot to death on
the Italian cruise ship near-
ly four years ago.
"An actor, when inter-
preting a specific role, must
construct within himself, in
his imagination, the
character and attitudes of the
person he is playing," Lan-
caster said.
He said he read, observed
and, most important, ques-
tioned the daughters of the
late Leon Klinghoffer, who
was confined to a wheelchair
at the time of the highjacking.
"I even consulted an or-
thopedist," said Lancaster, in-
dicating that he wanted to
learn how best to portray a
man who had suffered a crip-
pling stroke.
Much of the filming was
done aboard the Achille
Lauro, an indestructible
vessel since she was com-
pleted as the Dutch Willem
Roos just before the Nazi in-
vasion of Holland 49 years
ago.
