'Waltham, Mass. — The Na-
tional Center for Jewish Film
(NCJF), an archive on the
Brandeis University campus,
will present the world
premiere of the newly
restored The Dybbuk (Der
Dibuk), a classic Yiddish
feature film produced in
Poland in 1937. The film will
be shown at a private screen-
ing Sept. 14 at New York's
Museum of Modern Art. A
New York theatrical run is
planned immediately after
the premiere.
The film, based on the
celebrated play written by S.
Ansky during 1912-1917,
tells the story of two lovers in
a 19th Century Polish-Jewish
village. Shot on location in
Poland in 1937, during the
height of the Jewish cultural
activities and artistic freedom
which preceded World War II,
the film captures the cultural
heritage, folkways, supersti-
tions and practices of tradi-
tional Jewish life.
