Each month in this space,
L'Chayim will present a Yiddish
lesson entitled, "Du Redst Yiddish?
(Do You Speak Yiddish?)," whose
aim is to encourage further study of
Yiddish. The lesson will include a
brief story utilizing the Yiddish
words to be studied, a vocabulary
list with English translations and a
family activity which involves using
the new words. Two books which
may be helpful for beginning
Yiddish students are Yiddish for
Beginners by Dr. Joffen and Der
Yiddisher Lerer by Goldin.
Weinreich's English-Yiddish
Dictionary also may be useful. At
the conclusion of each lesson will
be a suggested list of books for
persons who wish to further their
knowledge.
The lessons were prepared by
Mary Koretz of Oak Park. She has
Detroit's Sister City In Israel
taught both children's and adult
classes in Yiddish at the Workmen's
Circle.
Following is this month's
lesson:
Detroit, along with acht other
American cities, selects a shvester
city in Israel. The tsil of this
program is to provide certain needs
of the designated shtot.
We dergraycht our objectives in
the city of Ramla, unzer first Project
Renewal sister city. Now we are
engaged in tawn the same for the
city of Yavne. Most importantly, our
objectives are to oifhaybn the level
of education and andere services.
Such services include a community
tsenter. This center is to provide for
yugent, senior adult and a new
toghaym for young children. Other
social projects will deal with familye
lebn and leadership growth.
Yavne is very noent to Israel's
major port of Ashdod. It has a
population of tsvay un tsvantsik
toyzenter. About 3,000 mentshn
live in Neot Shazar, a neighborhood
in the northeast vinkl of Yavne.
Most of the residents of Neot
Shazar emigrated from Sephardic
countries a sach years ago. It is
expected to vaksn by 900 new
families in the kumendike few
years, straining its ability tsu
farzorgn schooling and social
programs.
Yavne's geshichte is ancient
and reich in Jewish spiritual
survival. It is dermont in the Book
of Joshua, then noch amol during
the Maccabean Revolt and finally in
the hershaft of the Hasmonean
kings.
According to legend, Yohanan
Ben Zakkai hot gebetn the Romans
to preserve a yeshivah at Yavne
when the Temple was chorev
gemacht. His wish was granted.
Thus, Yavne and its yeshivah
became the new center of Jewish
geistik and intellectual life. In the
year 96 C.E. Rabban Gamliel
tsuzamin with the Sanhedrin
determined the Halakhah. They
funandergeboyt what we know
today as the prayer buch. For this
reason, Yavne replaced Jerusalem
during this period as the ort for
pilgrimages.
That was nechtin. Today, Yavne
is a city founded after the 1948
milchome for independence. It
houses immigrants from the gants
velt. With our help it will have a
future that befits its glorious past.
