the European flavor that it
had in the past," Levy says.
Back then, "you overheard
people speaking French or
Italian or something and you
didn't understand a word they
were saying."
Ring, a financial planner
from Berkley, says, "We've got
the same security problems
the whole way through." The
difference is there are more
Americans and fewer
foreigners.
Levy adds there were fewer
photographers this year. "It's
unbelievable. There were
spots, in the past you'd have
to elbow your way in or wait
patiently to take your turn
because there were all these
European photographers —
people from all over the
planet would come. Now there
are just two or three guys and
then they step out of your way
and you take your pictures.
But it doesn't even seem as
important because there's not
as many people shooting."
According to Ring, many
former DGPA volunteers were
Mel Hoberman
missing. They chose the For-
mula One race being held in
Montreal the same day he
says.
Ring says the DGPA re-
cruits volunteers all year
long. He thinks the DGPA
should now go after groups
rather than individuals — in-
cluding Jewish groups.
Levy says working at the
1983 race was "totally
chaotic," but things have im-
proved. However, Ring faced a
dilemma last year when
Edsel Ford tried to pass his
gate without proper creden-
tials. Ford Motor Co. is one of
the race's primary sponsors,

but "I almost kicked him
out," recalls Ring, "because I
didn't recognize him.
"And there was a senator
from Tennessee who came by
who didn't have the proper
credentials. I didn't know who
he was, I was finally convinc-
ed. I just let him through."
However, says Ring, "All the
drivers pass through my area
so I do get a chance for an ex-
cellent photograph" of them
coming from the hotel.
The hard part of Ring's job
is standing for three days.
"The best part of it is
meeting the interesting peo-
ple and talking to the fans
who may not know what's go-
ing on. You try to educate
them a little bit. It's really
nice to talk to people from out
of town as well, who don't
know anything about
Detroit."
But unlike the title of the
Indiana Jones film The Last
Crusade, the Indy cars — the
the DGPA — will return next
year, at least, to thrill area
racing fans again. ❑
