ing unkosher any material on
which he was working), and
virtually no one would even
know about it."
He also must be a man with
great patience. It takes Leaf
about three hours to make
the small scroll for the inside
of a mezuzah. And while
working on it, as with any im-
portant text, the scribe can-
not be making a mental list
of next week's responsibilities
or wondering what he will
prepare for dinner. He must
aim his thoughts to some-
thing holy. He must speak
aloud each word before he
writes it and should constant-
ly refer to a tikkun, or
manual, to be sure he has not
omitted anything. Upon com-
pletion, the mezuzah should
be taken to another scribe to
be double-checked.
It all adds up to a great deal
of time and energy for the
sofer, and money for the
consumer.
Leaf is familiar with com-
plaints about the high price of
mezuzot scrolls, which
average between $25 and $35.
Yet the protection mezuzot
provide — Leaf calls it "divine
protection" — is well worth
the cost, he says. "The
Lubavitcher Rebbe, Rabbi
Menachem Mendel Schneer-
son, says the mezuzah is to a
home what a helmet is to a
soldier. What soldier would go
into battle without his
helmet?" ❑

Israel May
Buy Airbus

Paris (JTA) — Israel and
France signed an agreement
last week for closer coopera-
tion in the fields of transpor-
tation and communications.
It may result in additional
landing rights in France for
Israel's national airline, El
Al.
El Al is now allowed to land
and pick up passengers in
Paris and Marseille. The right
may be extended to
Strasbourg or Lyon.
In addition, El Al might
buy the European Airbus,
produced in France, to replace
its aging Boeing aircraft.
Israeli officials here said
France might be asked to
help in the construction of a
subway system in the Tel Aviv
area and a fast-rail link con-
necting Haifa, Tel Aviv and
Ashdod.
Israeli minister of transpor-
tation Moshe Katsav also
signed an agreement with a
Boeing official to open an air-
craft spare parts facility in
Israel.
