the board of the Zionist Organization of America, is attending his first Assembly. He said the American Jewish economic involvement with Israel needs to change. "There's a new realization that buying bonds and philanthropy are fine. But Israel now needs, in addition, American Jews to invest and use their expertise to develop high-tech industries. This will be a magnetic force to at- tract olim from all over the world, including the United States," he said. Silverman is working on creating a vocational school in Israel to train carpenters to built American-style homes. The result would be greater employment and less dependence on Arab labor, Silverman said. The Assembly opened in the shadow of the continuing intifada. Said Silverman, "For me, this is a continua- tion of a struggle that's been going on for 40 years. The media have reversed the David and Goliath roles by portraying this as an Israeli- Palestinian war and not an Arab-Israeli war. Our job is clear: to put the roles in their true perspective." "I place Israel in a better position than in the summer of 1988, tourism-wise," Sher- man said. "The fact that Israel was off the front pages for a month because of China helped. There are difficulties. But you're safer here than in any place in Detroit." Sherman says she had to curtail some of her movements around the ter- ritories, but that there is no reason American Jews shouldn't come to Israel this summer. "I get in a hotel elevator and its filled with Japanese tourists. That's great," Sher- man said. "I'd also like to get into an elevator filled with American Jews."
