Detroiters Link With Yavne Via Community Programs Many Detroiters have become involved in a people-to-people program with Yavne — schools, organizations, agencies and individuals. Among them are: UNITED HEBREW SCHOOLS CLASS PROJECT: A visual display on the theme "Who Are We?" with a written script and the taped voices of UHS students. The display centers around the personal and Jewish aspects of students' lives, as well as Americana — music, clothes, books, magazines and the paraphernalia of American teens. Also included in the display will be general information about Jews in the United States, particularly teens. FRESH AIR SOCIETY: Five teens from Yavne will come to Camp Maas on scholarships this summer. Several other Yavne teens will join Detroit teens on a camping trip in Israel. Last summer, 10 youngsters from Yavne and Ramla were on scholarships at Camp Maas. TEMPLE ISRAEL: A donation to the child care center in Neot Shazar was given by the temple's Pilgrimage Group 1988. AMERICAN-ISRAEL CHAMBER OF COMMERCE BUSINESS MISSION: In February, the mission included Yavne on its itinerary to explore business development possibilities. A representative of the Michigan Department of Commerce was on the mission, and there was an exchange of flags between Michigan and Yavne. JEWISH FEDERATION APARTMENTS: A large-screen TV for the present senior citizens' center in Neot Shazar (to be put in the new building when completed) was purchased by the Residents Councils of Prentis Towers and Hechtman Federation Apartments. JFA residents are also initiating a pen-pal correspondence with older adults in Yavne. FUND RAISER FOR TOYS FOR DAY CARE CENTER: Shelley and Yair Nadiv and Lisa and Hannan Lis held a fund raiser at the home of Dr. William and Florine Mark Ross to raise money for toys for the day care center in Neot Shazar. VISITS TO YAVNE/HOME HOSPITALITY During visits to Israel, the following have been represented in Yavne: Adat Shalom Synagogue, Temple Israel, the Sharon Tsabari of Yavne came on scholarship to Camp Maas last summer. Erica Gottfried, left, and Jamie Pollak, right, meet an Israeli high school student from Yavne. Jewish Community Council, the Jewish Community Center and CAJE. Project Discovery students (high school students studying in Israel) have enjoyed home hospitality during their visits to Yavne, as have other Detroit visitors and those on missions. Detroit college students participating in Project Otzma (Detroit's "peace corps") were each "adopted" by a family during their recent stay in Yavne. Yavne Residents Wish To Learn About Detroit One way to learn about Jewish life around the world is to write to a Jewish family in another country. What is daily life like in the pen pal's country? What is Jewish life like? How are the holidays celebrated? Cost of an international air mail letter is 45 cents per half ounce.
