FRIDAY, JUNE 30, 1989

Rachel Weinberg, daughter
of Valerie and Max Weinberg,
twinned her bat mitzvah at
Congregation B'nai Israel of
West Bloomfield with Simona
Shifrin of Kaunas, Lithuania,
in the Soviet Union.
Simona is the daughter of
Ludmila and Vladislav
Shifrin and the sister of An-
na, who will celebrate her
11th birthday in July.
Vladislav Shifrin is a
mathematician and physicist;
his wife is an English teacher.
The family applied for per-
mission to emigrate to Israel
in 1979. Athough Vladislav
Shifrin's grandparents were
living in Israel, he and his
family were refused exit visas
because of insufficient
kinship.
Vladislav Shifrin is the son
of a refusenik. His grand-
mother, Sofiya, lives in a
home for the elderly in Israel.
His grandfather died in 1987.
