I
t was the annual election
meeting of Temple Beth
El Brotherhood, in-
cluding installation of officers
and board members for
1989-90 . . . But for many, this
order of business took a
backseat as other festivities
forged to the forefront.
The dinner, attended by
about 200, again brought out
the culinary talents of Temple
Beth El Brotherhood's eight
amateur chefs who make up
its Cuisne Committee,
preparing a meal of which
many caterers would be en-
vious . . . The chefs are Dr.
Burt Fogelman, Brotherhood
president; Marshal Hersch,
Dr. Jerry Gerenraic, Eric Can-
vasser, Bruce Plisner, Mike
Seltzer, Larry Coe and Allen
Glass.
Seated at our table were
Lem Barney, former Detroit
Lions all-pro defensive back;
Nick Kerbaway, former
general manager of the Lions
and ex-head of Michigan
sports Hall of Fame; Jean and
Roy "Friday" Macklin, one-
time Lions trainer; and Fran
and Izzy Malin, who coor-
dinated the affair with Tem-
ple Beth El's board of
directors.
Lem was without the
familiar derby as he looked in
great shape while posing as a
waiter pouring coffee . . . Lem
still has one more sport to
master, squash . . . he's a whiz
at everything else.
A bust of the late Aid
Kushner, former Mr. Every-
thing at Temple Beth El and
one-time Lions trainer while
"Friday" was equipment
manager had its unveiling .. .
Iz Malin and Rabbi Emeritus
Richard Hertz did the dedica-
tion as sculptress Joyce Got-
tlieb looked on.
They also were presenters of
the Robert Rosenbush Award
to the first woman receiving
it since the inception in 1977
when it was given to Doug
Schubot, then vice president,
who took over as president
when Robert passed on.
Flora Winton, Frank's frau,
a past and only woman presi-
dent of Temple Beth El,
received the coveted award
given annually to a most
deserving person.
Aid received the award in
1979.
DENTAL DOC Elliot
Folbe and daughter Ellen,
student at U-M Dental
School, were recently on
WXYZ-TV's "Kelly & Co." .. .
She had entered a "Why My
Dad Is Best" contest and was
one of six people who won .. .
Ellen can have anything she
wants now from Elliot, says
mom Rita.
NO, LENNY Silber doesn't
have a new wife . . . It's still
Ilene . . . not Jean as boo-boo'd
recently . . . Also on the er-
rata list is the name of Stu
Rogoff's band . . . It's "The
Class Act Orchestra" . . . Stu
says the other name belongs
to another group and a valet
parking company.
TOO BAD they don't have
a Hall of Fame for women,
says Debbie Weisserman of
Debora's Invitations . . . "If
they did," pens Debbie, "my
mom, Kate Goldfine, would
surely have a place in it."
Kate attended her 65th
class reunion from Central
High and reminisced about
the days she was a wonderful
athete at Central . . . Kate
always wears a gold medal
with a large "C" around her
neck . . . awarded to her for
basketball, baseball, track
and field hockey . . . Kate
even played baseball on the
exalted turf of old Navin Field
(now Tiger Stadium) with the
girls' baseball team . . . It was
before a Tiger game and the
base paths had to be shorten-
ed for the gals.
HEATHER
CONN,
daughter of former localites
Dr. and Rhoda (Farley) Conn,
now living in Plantation,
Fla., is Broward County's
spelling champion . . . and
beat all other Floridians by
finishing 14th in the 62nd an-
nual Scripps Howard Spelling
Bee . . . It was in Washington,
D.C., where Heather outspell-
ed 208 of the nation's top
fourth to eighth grade cham-
pions from around the coun-
try. O
