I hazarded a few steps
toward him. "What are you
doing?"
Grimly, he sawed one.
If so minded, he could saw
my neck as well. But it was
too much. A man must make
a stand somewhere. "Why are
you doing that?" I called out,
holding my cane at the ready.
"It will be all right." It
came through clenched teeth,
with the sawing
uninterrupted.
I was back under the
lamplight and could see what
he was doing. The blossoming
plank end extended maybe a
foot beyond the steel frame to
which it was bolted. From
what I could make out, my
man was sawing off that ex-
tension. With the little saw
he had, he had a lot of sawing
ahead of him. "It will be all
right," he gritted.
"But will the bench?" I
tried to put a chuckle into it.
I began to feel less afraid,
came closer.
"I have arranged," he said.
"It will be all right." He
straightened up, left off saw-
ing, stared down at his work.
I still liked him, undeni-
ably. 'lb me, he still appeared
every inch the lonely stoic
gentleman. But even if he
was a biblical angel, he was
destroying the bench.
"Forgive me," I said, "but just
what are you trying to do?"
"I have arranged," he said,
his sad dark eyes unwavering
into mine. "Tomorrow will
come a man and put a new
board. New. Better than this
one. I have arranged." And he
began sawing again.
I no longer felt afraid of
him. "Why go through all
this trouble though?" To be
heard, I had to raise my voice.
Regrettably, for to my ears it
sounded as if I were hectoring
him.
He stopped, straightened
up, focused on me. Then he
shook his head No, waved a
hand No before my face — and
resumed sawing.
Now that nettled me. After
all, he was destroying public
property, my property. An old
friend, I had with pussy-
footing delicacy tried to make
him aware. For that he in ef-
fect repremanded me as if I
were a pertinacious child, as
if it were I who was in the
wrong. "Well," I let him have
it so he could hear, "You're
lucky the police are so short-
handed. If they had enough
men for the patrols they
should have you'd have been
hauled off to jail by now."
He froze; the sawing stop-
ped. "Right," he said to the
saw. "But I have arranged."
Animals lower their heads
that way before making their
leap, after which you are in
bloody bits. I had nothing
more to say or do here. I
turned to go.
"You do not believe?"
I didn't know what to say.
"No, you do not believe." He
straightened up, suddenly sat
down. "Yes . . ."
What I indeed did not
believe was that from him I
should ever see such utter
abandon. He sprawled, a very
forlorn collapsed sad sack.
Astonishing. What could I
say?
"I am walking here. Yes . . ."
he comtemplated aloud. "She
was with her children. All my
life I have been looking upon
women. But of all women this
woman — On her I did not
dare look. Not as I have look-
ed on the others. Of her — her

laughter . . . Her children
were happy in her. It could be
heard. Yes . . . such happiness
. . . I did not believe it could
be.
"I watched. She ran in the
grass with them. Then one
little girl brought her a twig.
She ran with it to the bench,
this bench; sat on this place.
They all came about her.
Laughing . . . laughing .. .
And she put the twig where
you see . . . where it is .. .
"It is a holy place . . . holy
. . . That I have seen her, it is
a gift from heaven. But this —
her place — her flower — I
must have for memory."
"I see," I said.
"I have arranged. It will be
all right."
"I understand," I said. "God
bless you. Shalom." My wife
was distraught, worrying
about what had become of me.
The next day I walked on
the other side of Herzog
Street. I didn't want to meet
him; I couldn't say why. I like
uneventfulnees. In fact, for
the whole next week I walk-
ed on the other side. But then
my wife expressed a yen to sit
in the park; the children glad-
den her. Then I remembered:
had he indeed "arranged,"
made it "all right"?
He had. A fine new plank
was in place of the old.
It made me feel wonderful-
ly good. It reinstated him in
my mind. I wanted him to be
the man I imagined. Reas-
