abusing chidren," Lefton said.
Every call we receive is dealt
with in strict confidentiality.
Some people can't believe that
Jewish people have such
needs.
"We also receive many calls
from outside the Jewish com-
munity. They call us because
they hear that Jewish people
will help. We refer them to
secular agencies. We once
received a call from K-mart.
They wanted to know what
cities in the United States had
Jewish populations of over
25,000, so they would know
what stores should sell holi-
day material. We were able to
answer their question."
When they get a call,
volunteers can turn to a
resource file containing
10,000 sources. The first seven
months of the program's ex-
istence were devoted to
gathering data, Silver said. As
the volunteers have looked in-
to more questions, further
resources have been added
from their own experiences
and from newspapers.
People who want to help or
who are in businesses that
assist people in their homes,
call JIS to offer their services.
They are checked out and add-
ed to the file.
"We probably have the best
resource data base in the
Jewish community," Silver
said. "We start with a training
manual for volunteers and
videotapes on all the Jewish
agencies. We network a lot
Nvith the other Jewish infor-
mation services and Jewish
welfare federations
throughout the country. There

is a National Association of
Jewish Information Services.
"We have a good handle on
all the services the agencies
provide. Our volunteers all
have different backgrounds
and we share expertise. We
tend to sit and brainstorm
solutions to difficult ques-
tions."
The next task of the JIS
staff is to put all that resource
information on computer.
Silver said she "lives in fear
a fire will destroy our resource
file."
"We have the beginnings of
a system," Silver said. "We are
going to access all information
and hook into the Federation
computer. We will be constant-
ly updating the information.
We are also updating our in-
formation to publish a guide
to Jewish Detroit. That will of-
fer much of our resources to
the entire community." ❑

Kids find us fun,
but our pasta's no joke.

Chef Boyardee'' Dinosaurs, ABC's & 1, 2, 3's, and
Tic Tac Toes pasta is serious food kids love to eat.
While we make our pasta in shapes kids find fun to
eat, we also make sure they're filled with good
ingredients like: rich. ripe tomatoes, aged cheese
and enriched wheat flour. So Chef Boyardee pasta
is a source of protein that's also 95% fat free, and
contains complex carbohydrates without any pre-
servatives. No wonder both kids and moms thank
goodness for Chef Boyardee.
