NANCY GORMAN

War II and the Korean War.
Although he has never rac-
ed, he took the Jim Russell
racing school's three-day
course in 1983 and so could
try to race an Indy car. Would
he? "Yeah, me and Walter
Mitty," he jokes, adding, "It's
an exciting thing, but that's
for young people, even though
you've got some drivers who
are 50."
Kraines is active in many
Jewish organizations. He is a
Jewish federation board
member in Los Angeles, is a
sponsor of Ben Gurion and Tel
Aviv universities and sup-
ports numerous other Jewish
causes.
Although Jews are a
minority in auto racing,
Kraines says it makes no dif-
ference to anyone in the rac-
ing business. "No. Religion is
religion, but religion doesn't
affect the racing one way or
the other."
Kraines is happy to have
Bobby Rahal driving his car
now, especially since Rahal
edged Andretti for the title
two straight years. "He's one
of the nicest, smoothest peo-
ple we know," Kraines says.
"Very congenial, very helpful.
He's an 'up' guy, keeps morale
going. And also a great race
driver. Has a great associa-
tion with all the crew
members . . . Great speaker,
great spokesman."
The role of spokesman is
part of a driver's job, since he
represents his sponsor to the
racing public. "He's always in
front of the public," notes
Kraines of Rahal. "He also
gives interviews, gives opi-
nions, is in front of the televi-
sion.Very important . . . for
Kraco and any other sponsor
that's on our car."
Wally Dallenbach, Sr., an
Indy-car driver in the 1960s
and '70s, who was in town for
the Grand Prix, says, "The
bottom line is, you can't go
wrong with a Bobby Rahal;
you can't go wrong with a
Kraco. They're going to be a
winning team. It takes about
one year for a new driver and
team to mesh."
Kraco is in a rebuilding
year. Again, the circuit is
dominted by Chevy engines.
Kraco is the lone team using
an experimental Cosworth
engine, which Kraines
believes will eventually pay
off.
Kraco's best finish so far is
fourth at Long Beach. Still,
Kraines believes the team
can win this season. "We
hope to run good by the end
of the season. We hope to be
running very competitive all
next year."
"Adrenaline runs; the com-
petition is stiff . . . that's what
does it." 111
