old and who's also stronger
than you. So if a horse really
doesn't want to do it, he
wins."
Friedman's goal is to
qualify for national competi-
tions, although she believes
she doesn't spend enough
time on showing to win. She
competes at the top "A" level
and the "B" level in
Michigan, but after next year,
probably will not show horses
seriously. Instead, she will
study and put her energy in-
to building a career. "I
pretty much have my life
planned out," she says. "I'm
going to take over for Barbara
Walters."
She looks forward to more
success with Billy in the next
two seasons and hopes for im-
provement with President.
"The hardest thing, I think,
is when I try real hard — I
ride seven days a week and I
really work hard at it — and
I try my best to look the pret-
tiest out there, and I don't
win."
Even more disappointing,
she says, is seeing someone
else get on an easy horse and
do well, "because Formal At-
tire is a really frustrating
horse and I'm not used to
that. I'm just used to getting
on Mastercard and flopping
around and just him showing
me.
"Mastercard and I are a
team and we were ever since
we started off," she says.
"President and I are just —
we're starting to become a
team. So it's real frustrating
when I work real hard and I
go in the ring and he doesn't
behave."
Friedman says President is
"a good horse, but he needs to
learn a lot." Her goal is for
him to win a couple of first-
place blue ribbons, "which he
did last year — but he could
be a lot better."
President will be sold,
however, if Friedman can

train him enough to make
him attractive to another
rider. However, Billy is "my
horse; he's mine forever."
Billy, she says, seems to
have an identity problem. "I
don't think he knows he's a
horse," says Friedman. "He's
a ham." --
Billy, who does tricks for his
favorite treat — Froot Loops
cereal — is so in tune with his
rider, he can recognize Fried-
man's voice even without see-
ing her from his Haverhill
Farms stall in Walled Lake.
Friedman says the key is
patience. "You have to be a
gentle person," she insists,
"because if you're not gentle,
the horse doesn't like it .. .
The more gentle you are to
the horse, the more comfor-
table he feels."
Friedman, who had both a
confirmation and- bat mitz-
vah, is increasingly in-
terested in Judiasm. She
belongs both to Temple Shir
Shalom and Temple Beth El,
where she is active in the
youth group, and she plans to
keep attending services,
She will also stay interested
in horses, even when she
leaves serious competition
behind.
"If I don't end up showing
Billy as an adult, I'll have
him forever and I'll just end
up probably keeping him at
Metamora (in Oxford
Township), so he can be turn-
ed out and eat all day. Then
I can just get on him and go
on trails, maybe show one or
two shows, just for the fun of
it. But I won't be competing
as I am now, which is going to
be a hard switch."
Whether she is showing
horses or working on TV
shows, Friedman will shoot
for the top. "That's how I
basically made it through my
years of riding: wanting the
highest there can possibly be
and just getting it step by
step." 0
