Thurs. & Fri. 10-9 Sun. 12-5 • 647-0550 ubbies, zadies and grandchildren will have a joint Jewish ex- perience next fall when the B'nai Moshe Nursery School opens a branch at the Jewish Home for Aged Fleischman Residence-Blumberg Plaza. The school will operate three mornings per week with a lunch option. A total of 15 children, age 2 and 3, can be accommodated, and the staff will include two teachers and an aide. The idea for the school came from B'nai Moshe board member Pearlena Bodzin. The synagogue's rabbi, Allan Meyerowitz, then met with the Fleischman officials who approved the idea. A West Bloomfield site was sought because the nursery wanted to establish a presence in West Bloomfield, according to nursery director Robin Sack Meyerowitz, wife of B'nai Moshe's rabbi. The synagogue has purchased land on Drake Road near Maple, but construction has not yet started. Prior to fin- ding the Fleischman residence, renting a house or space at a West Bloomfield school or the Maple/Drake Jewish Community Center was investigated, but the schools and the Center turn- ed the nursery down. Mrs. Meyerowitz will be the director. She will divide her time between the West Bloomfield branch in the mor- nings and Oak Park school in the afternoons. A teacher by trade, Mrs. Meyerowitz has undergraduate and graduate degrees in education and has taught both in public and Jewish schools. Rabbi Meyerowitz will take an active part in the schools' activities as well. He fre- quently drops in to play with the children and talk about the holidays and Jewish life and makes a point of getting the children actively involv- ed. "He's like another teacher, " Mrs. Meyerowitz said. "The children love him. They call him Rabbi Allan." What the rabbi also tries to do for the children is make a connection between the synagogue and the nursery school. He led a seder, wore costumes to teach the children about Purim and during Chanukah involved them in role playing. They portrayed the Maccabees as he recited the Chanukah story. When the branch opens in the fall, Rabbi Meyerowitz will conduct the Friday mor- ning program. He will teach the children and the senior adults about the Torah por- tion of the week, Shabbat songs, stories and dances. The nursery school will meet in the Fleischman ac- tivity and exercise rooms. The children also will have access to the greenhouse and, thanks to a grant from the Benard Maas Foundation, there will be a playground for the nursery children and others who visit their grand- parents at the residence. Funding for the West Bloomfield branch will come from B'nai Moshe, individual donors and tuition. The school will pay a rental fee to Fleischman.
