Canada May
Extradite Nazi
Toronto (JTA) — The first
denaturalization hearing
against a Nazi war criminal
in Canada, which ended in
federal court in Vancouver on
last week, could lead to the
defendant losing his Cana-
dian citizenship if the court
decides he lied about his past
to obtain it.
The hearing against Jacob
Luitjens, 70, a convicted
Dutch Nazi collaborator,
began Sept. 26.
Fifty witnesses were heard,
more than 200 documents
were received and a commis-
sion of inquiry traveled twice
to Holland to take testimony
from witnesses too old or ill to
come to Canada.
If Luitjens' citizenship is
revoked by the court, deporta-
tion proceedings would be
initiated.
Immigration Minister Bar-
bara McDougall would then
have to decide whether Luit-
jens is sent to Paraguay,
where he lived for 13 years
before coming to Canada in
1961, or to another country.
The Dutch government has
asked for his extradition to
serve out the life sentence he
received after being tried in
absentia by a Dutch court in
1948.
But Canadian courts ruled
that the extradition treaty
between the two countries
does not cover the crime of
collaboration with the enemy.
It is the contention of
Crown prosecutors, Arnold
Fradkin and William Hobson,
that Luitjens made false and
misleading statements when
he received Canadian na-
tionality in 1971.
Japan Pushed
On Arab Boycott
New York — The American
Jewish Congress, as part of its
effort to monitor and prevent
the Arab boycott of Israel, has
written a letter to Carla Hills,
U.S. trade representative, sug-
gesting that the Japanese
government issue instruc-
tions to its trading companies
not to violate the U.S. anti-
boycott law.
The letter used the recent
Daiichi Jitsugyo settlement
as an example of a situation
that could have been avoided
if the Japanese had issued in-
structions not to violate U.S.
anti-boycott laws.
Daiichi Jitsugyo (America)
Inc., had received a directive
from its Japanese parent com-
pany to "Strictly observe the
Boycott of Israel."
