youth. I don't have a lot of
sympathy for him," Perle
said. But, he added, the
sentences of other recently
convicted spies "should have
been harsher."
Regarding the Palestine
Liberation Organization,
Perle said, "I don't believe
there is sufficient evidence
the PLO is ready to live in
peace with Israel. I believe
what they have done" in
declarations regarding Israel
"has been done
disingenuously.
"We have a right to insist
that if they mean what they
say, that they delete
references to Israel's destruc-
tion from their covenant." ❑

Police Probe
Racist Graffiti

Police are investigating an
incident in which anti-Arab
graffiti was found on Moslem
community property in the
Detroit suburb of
Brownstown Township.
The vandalism, which oc-
curred last week at a
Pakistani house of worship,
follows a controversy over the
group's intention to build a
mosque. The Pakistanis were
about to receive final ap-
proval on the building, which
some resident reportedly
oppose.
Police have no suspects in
the case.
The Detroit Interfaith
Round Table of the National
Conference of Christians and
Jews, together with the
Jewish Community Council
of Metropolitan Detroit,
issued a statement deploring
the vandalism.

declining, the country has
continued massive manufac-
ture of conventional
weaponry.
The Soviet Union is "a
failure because it's based on
the subordination of the in-
dividual to the state," he said,
and he doubted Soviet leader
Mikhail Gorbachev can
reform the country.
American Jews "must
rededicate ourselves to the
values of individual liberty"
on which the United States is
based.
Perle said the Reagan ad-
ministration "made the world
a safer place" by having
"rebuilt the national defense"
while also reducing nuclear
weaponry. "American
strength means security' for
Israel. We should be grateful
we have developed the securi-
ty and strength that we have
today," he said.
In post-speech comments,
Perle said he would tell Soviet
Jews "if they have the oppor-
tunity to leave, then get the
hell out" because official
Soviet policy could change
momentarily.
He likened the Reagan
Strategic Defense Initiative,
or Star Wars, weaponry pro-
gram to an insurance policy.
Regarding Jonathan
Pollard, who is serving a life
sentence for spying on behalf
of Israel, Perle said, "I
wouldn't want to defend what
he did, yet his sentence is
very severe." He doubted the
U.S. was withholding infor-
mation on Israel's security.

two metro-area tennis
centers. "Now Israel is one of
the top 16 countries in Cup
competition.
"Hopefully, through tennis,
Israel will gain acceptance by
countries with which it has
no official relations now," he
said.
But the biggest achieve-
ment, Brode felt, is Jewish
and Arab youngsters have
been brought together by the
ITCA facilities.
"The adults you know are
not going to get along. But
maybe through tennis, the
youngsters will learn how for
the future,"Brode said.
"The centers have grown
beyond our expectations — we
have over 180 employees,
what with coaches and all —
and we need additional funds
both to sustain the program

and to continue to grow to
meet the demands."
lbward that end, the ITCA
is offering a Founders' and
Young Founders' Tour to
Israel Oct. 15-24. Young
Founders is for those 21 to 35
years of age.
The team in Detroit last
week is one of three criss-
crossing the United States
and Canada, giving a total of
62 exhibitions through June.
"We went to the 10th an-
niversary of ITCA in Israel,"
said Sandra Rubin of Bloom-
field Hills, who with husband
Marvin has been an ITCA
supporter for about six years.
"They (Israeli youngsters)
think we (Americans) are
great. They're using the
facilities all the time — if it
rains, they study or use the
libraries." ❑
