Shumaker /— L Dr. Jay Shumaker, chief of the gastrointestinal depart- ment at Newton-Wellesley (Mass.) Hospital has died. He was 46. Born in Detroit, Dr. Shumaker was graduated from Dartmouth College and the Harvard Medical School. He was trained at Massachusetts General Hospital. Dr. Shumaker taught gastrointestinal studies at the Tufts Universty School of Medicine and headed a nutri- tion and obesity program at Newton-Wellesley. He also had a private practice. Dr. Shumaker was active in the Anti-Defamation League and the Physicians Unit of Combined Jewish Philan- thropies. He was a member o the Dartmouth Alumni Association and Temple Mishkan Tefila in Newton, Mass. He is survived by his wife, Rickel; two sons, Adam and John; a daughter, Dana; and his mother, Lilian Shumaker of Southfield. Interment West Roxbury, Mass. Laura Weiss Laura Weiss, a 40-year Red Cross volunteer, died June 17 at age 72. Born in Detroit, Mrs. Weiss was a volunteer for Meals on Wheels and a member of Louis Marshall Chapter of B'nai B'rith Women. She leaves her husband, Norman; children, David Zelmon, Barbara Schuster, Dr. Jerome Weiss of Modesta, Calif., Marlin Taylor and Erica Weiss of Thl Aviv, Israel; two brothers, Dr. Charles Ditkoff and Frank Ditkoff; seven grandchildren and one great-granddaughter. Herman Osnos Herman Osnos, a vice presi- dent and major stockholder of Sam's Inc., died June 16 at age 88. Born in New York City, Mr. Osnos lived many years in Detroit prior to retiring to Stamford, Conn. He was a 32nd degree Mason, a member of the Knights of Pythias, past president of Pisgah Lodge of B'nai B'rith, a member of Congregation Shaarey Zedek and the Shriners. He was a 60-year member of the Old Newsboys Goodfellow group. He leaves his wife, Helen; a son, Gilbert of Stamford; a brother, Bernard of Miami Beach, Fla.; a sister, Mrs. Mabel Austin of Tallahassee, Fla.; and two grandchildren. Interment Detroit. Evelyn Grand Evelyn M. Grand, a member of Jewish communal organizations, died June 19 at age 75. Born in Jamestown, N.Y., Mrs. Grand was a member of Congregation Shaarey Zedek, Hadassah, Women's American ORT, American Society for Technion. She leaves her husband, Salman; two daughters, Elizabeth Marcus of San Francisco, Calif., and Mrs. Richard (Diana) Grand Karp of Berkeley, Calif.; a son, Stephen; five grandchildren, nieces and nephews. Harriet Band Harriet B. Band, past na- tional board member of Hadassah, died June 19 at age 70. Born in Detroit, Mrs. Band was a member of Temple Emanu-El, Founders Society of Detroit Institute of Arts and a docent at the DIA, Brandeis University National Women's Committee, Women's American ORT and the Tam-O-Shanter Country Club. She leaves her husband, Oscar; two sons, Alan of Scott- sdale, Ariz., and Stanley; a sister, Mrs. Aron (Barbara) Kahn of Winetka, Ill.; and one grandson. Janice Epstein Janice C. Epstein, an artist, died June 16 at age 38. Born in Detroit, Mrs. Eps- tein was a member of Con- gregation Shaarey Zedek, Jewish Welfare Federation, Magen David Adorn, Women's American ORT, a life member of Hadassah and a member of Na'amat (formerly Pioneer Women). She leaves her husband, Dr. Stewart; two step-daughters, Lisa and Jodi; her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Manny (Natalie) Charach; a brother, Jeffrey of Studio City, Calif.; her grand- mothers, Rose Miller and Clara Charach.
