works' sexier scenes rated
some parental guidance from
her mom.
She laughs when recalling
her mother's reaction to a
sultry scene from Close Rela-
tions. "Susan, dear," said one
of her closest relations, "did
you ever have that sort of .. .
relationship?"
"Mom did wonder," says
Isaacs, who promptly put her
mother's mind at east with an
"art doesn't always imitate
life" reminder.
But what a life never-
theless. A former senior
editor of Seventeen magazine,
Isaacs edited herself out of a
job to raise her son, Andrew.
When her second child,
Elizabeth, was born, Isaacs
had time on her hands and
ideas in mind: Her first novel,
Compromising Positions, be-
came a Book-of-the-Month
Club selection. The 1980 best-
selling Close Relations was
followed four years later by
Almost Paradise.
No wonder she shines with
pride. But don't mistake pride
for prissy bravura. Isaacs is
down-to-earth even with her
global travels and writings.
Here is a woman whose novel
ideas book her entry into an
elite group of successful con-
temporary authors and script-
writers (the movie Hello
Again).
"I'm just an ordinary
woman," says Isaacs,
"celebrating ordinary women
in my work."
Ordinary women — in ex-
traordinary circumstances.
But one shouldn't mistake
character for author, cautions
Isaacs. "I live in town; people
see me at school meetings, at
temple," she says with a
shrug.
Ordinary? There is nothing
everyday about a career that
every day promises to start off
with a rocket. But Isaacs
remembers all too well when
her days started with a fizz
rather than a fury.
"As a teen, I was always
having boys say to me, 'What
a great personality!' " says
the writer who still has one.
"I just didn't want to hear
that."
What she has been hearing
from reviewers and readers is
how funny she is, what a way
she has with her wit. She
shakes her head. "I can't tell
a joke, I was never the class
clown — I can't even write a
joke."
No joke, she says. "The
worst is when I'm on a movie
set and someone says, 'Quick,
write me some funny lines.'
My humor rises out of funny
situations."
Beyond the challenges of a
mystery/adventure, Isaacs'
