An additional comment. In
mentioning the various
school locations, one was not
mentioned and that's the one
on Farnsworth Street (later
taken over by Yeshiva Beth
Yehudah).
It was in that building that
I first attended classes on
coming to the United States
in the fall of 1921. Kirby
Center was not yet built.
Before graduation, about
three years later, we moved
into Kirby Center.

I am confident that a new
black-Jewish coalition is be-
ing forged today all over
America: in the halls of Con-
gress, where black and
Jewish legislators work close-
ly together on a host of shared
issues; in churches and
synagogues; at Christian and
Jewish seminaries, where
tomorrow's religious leaders
are being trained; and final-
ly, in countless places of
business and employment.
It is, of course, a difficult
task, because today's issues
are so complex and because
the expectations are so dif-
ferent for blacks and Jews.
But the rebuilding of a new
black-Jewish coalition is
urgently needed now in
America, and it is perhaps
the best way to honor the
memories of James Chaney,
Andrew Goodman and
Michael Schwerner.

sadness the brutal deaths of
Chaney, Goodman and
Schwerner. But something
more is needed now: the forg-
ing of a new black-Jewish
coalition for the 1990s.
Such a coalition must focus
on the persistence of racism
and anti-Semitism within the
American society, and it must
zero in on the need for fair
and full employment, the lack
of affordable housing (an
enormous threat to both
black and Jewish family
stability) and the quest for
quality education.
On the international rela-
tions front (something blacks
and Jews rarely, if ever, spoke
about together back in the
1960s), there should be joint
efforts against apartheid in
South Africa, and for the
strengthening of Israel's
security and survival, while
