now her "20/20" co-anchor —
was manning the "Today"
desk. Thirteen years later,
she was named co-anchor. In
1976, Walters joined ABC as
network evening news co-
anchor with Harry Reasoner;
she was the first woman to
take such a position.
It was an anchor job attack-
ed by sharks. Critics targeted
Walters for her multimillion-
dollar salary; the on-air rap-
port with Reasoner was rocky
at best. This was no Good
Ship Lollipop — more like a
Titanic
deluged with
criticism, much of it unfair.
"That was a very unhappy
period for me," she says.
Interviews proved her
lifeboat and lifestyle. In
1982-1983, "The Barbara
Walters Special' notched an
Emmy Award as outstanding
informational series.
For her information, au-
diences let Walters know how
important timing can be.
"The first program I was on
had Anwar Sadat on it, and it
was the night of Yom Kippur,"
she says, wincing at the
memory — and the criticism
she still hears.
After so many one-on-ones,
Walters has won quite a
following — both with au-
diences and stars who covet a
spot on her specials. Yet, she
admits, there are still those
celebrities who bypass her
specials "because maybe they
think it would be too reveal-
ing."
Walters reveals much about
her tenacity when she talks
about the one interview she
would like to do before retir-
ing: the ever-elusive Greta
Garbo.
Has she ever come close to
getting it? "Good question"
she says, smiling the smile of
a woman who knows when a
"no comment" is just as good
an answer as any. ❑
