oc, THE
BAR-B-Q HOUSE
AND GRILL

the joke pertains to my ex-
wife. You know, she got all the
property and once in a while
they allow me in the com-
munity. Or she got the car
and I got the driveway. Or she
got the swimming pool, I got
the diving board."
Today, Carter spends little
time on the road, prefering,
instead, to stay in Beverly
Hills and try his hand at win-
ning those elusive dramatic
roles. When he does travel to
perform, however, he says
some audiences can't believe
he's still around and working.
"People often ask me how I do
it — how I stay so young-
looking? I tell them it works
something like the Portrait of
Dorian Gray. Only I don't
have a picture in the attic. I
keep Henny Youngman lock-
ed up in the closet."
A former professional ar-
tist, for relaxation off the
road, Carter continues to
sculpt and sketch. He also
bears a trained musical corn-
edy voice, is an ardent music
lover, a fine tennis player and
an excellent golfer.
He takes great offense
when asked if he has any
plans to retire. "Retire? Retire
to what?" he bellows. "What
kind of question is that? Why
don't you ask George Burns
that question?"
One question Carter does
take under serious considera-
tion, however, is the one that
asks about any regrets.
"Of course I have regrets. I
would have done everything
in my life differently," he says
quite seriously. "I would have
concentrated more on my ac-
ting and stayed Nvith it. I
would have learned musical
instruments and stayed with
that back in the '50's when I
was at my height. I would
have gotten better help. I
never had great management
or help from anybody, and
anybody I did have I drove
away from me.
"I had an awfully big
mouth," he claims. "I'm
tough, but mainly on myself.
I was a terrible taskmaster. I
wanted perfection. When I
did my shows they had to be
perfect, and in those days the
network would throw junk at
you. They'd give you amateur
producers, amateur writers.
'Terrible things. And so I
fought for the best because I
knew what I wanted."
Carter describes himself as
basically a moody person and
admits that's a quality that
has been somewhat of a deter-
rent in his life. "Left on my
own, when I don't think about
it, I have a sour, angry look.
In fact, I've been called the
`Last Angry Comic.' But I'm
not. When I look like that I'm
really just thinking. Carl
