NFWB president, "is seeing
hundreds of kids playing
baseball. We're not raising
professional baseball players,
although a few end up with
college scholarships. Most
kids play because they want
the social experience. Besides,
it helps get them out of the
house and lets them par-
ticipate in some kind of
athletic endeavor."
Ellis, a Huntington Woods
Little League graduate, has
one son, Evan, 13, still play-
ing. Another son, Andrew, 17,
played nine years.
Susan Shepherd of Farm-
ington Hills, mother of three
Little Leaguers and a self-
described "crazy sports nut,"
had been a "team mom —
supplying drinks, keeping
score of games" before becom-
ing vice president of uniforms
and trophies this season for
the NFWB.
"It's kind of fun," she says
of ordering, sorting, storing
and readying for pickup 1,400
uniforms — caps, shirts and
pants — all done from her
home. Getting sponsors'
shirts to the correct teams is
crucial, she says.
Shepherd "loves to watch
the kids, although it got a lit-
tle complicated when I was

trying to be in three places at
once. Now it's easier because
two of my kids are playing
Tuesdays and Fridays."
Barry Levine of West
Bloomfield Township,
Franklin Baseball League
vice president who's in his
sixth year of coaching, puts in
four nights per week plus
Saturdays on Little League.
"I love baseball, but I don't
love it as much as I love my
kids."
When divorce made him a
single parent with custody of
sons Sandy and Jordan, "the
change in lifestyle was a
shock to me because I never
grew up in that sort of en-
vironment. As a consequence,
I wanted to do whatever I
could to enhance my relation-
ship with my kids." He
became a Little League
coach.
Levine likes the interfaith
mix provided by the Franklin
League. "It gives the kids a
good opportunity to ex-
perience what life is like. As
it is, the kids grow up here in
an almost all-Jewish environ-
ment, but the league gives
them exposure."
Now remarried, Levine says
he "would like to see mothers
take a more active role."
